Surrounded by the “Inside Out: Dignity and the Art of Seeing” exhibit at the Eye Street Gallery, we reflected on creativity and the lived experiences of women photographers from the DC Jail. Thanks to everyone who joined us for an afternoon rooted in sisterhood and storytelling.

This month, we're talking about the Black history that shapes our nation's capital. ‌ Kicking it off with John A. Wilson—the first Ward 2 Councilmember after Home Rule and the namesake of the John A. Wilson Building, the seat of local government. ‌ Wilson's local leadership and the building named after him mark key milestones in DC's ongoing struggle for self-governance and local autonomy. ‌ The fight for representation is inseparable from the Black history of our city—we carry that legacy forward by protecting Home Rule and continuing to fight for statehood.

11 years ago today, I was sworn in as Mayor of DC for the first time. I'm grateful to DC voters for putting their trust in me, to the 37,000 DC Gov workers, and I'm grateful that we've been able to take big swings and deliver on big promises. Let's run through the tape.

The Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge has been an iconic part of the DC skyline since 2021. And on January 1, 2026, it will host the New Year’s Day Fresh Start 5K. No better place to bring in the new year as a community.

Last month, DCHA youth watched the Wizards beat the Hawks at Capital One Arena. The outing was part of the Secure the BAG (Behavior, Attendance, Grades) Initiative from @MOAAA_DC and @DCMOCA that encourages DC students to do their best. Through this initiative, students can submit proof of good grades and attendance every quarter and be rewarded with a special outing or event. If you know a DCHA student who is interested in participating in this program, please contact our Special Initiatives & Youth Coordinator, Ty’Ronn Spriggs, at tkspriggs@dchousing.org.

NEW: We're building the largest capital project in @dcfireems history. This $85 million campus will service 500 emergency vehicles—and support vehicles for @OSSEDC's daily transportation of 3,400 special needs students. That's how we invest in a safer, stronger DC.

Shutdowns hurt Americans everywhere, but they are especially devastating for those who live and work in our nation’s capital. As Americans everywhere grapple with the senselessness of this shutdown, it is welcome news to DC and our region that this measure reverses mass layoffs implemented during the shutdown and prevents similar efforts for the duration of the continuing resolution. If nothing else has come from this shutdown, we have once again been reminded that 700,000 DC residents deserve a vote and a voice in our Congress.
