Watching @JasonWrich do the unglamorous work reminds me of something important. Leadership in this movement isn’t a podium. It’s a laundry pile. The land doesn’t care about your schedule. It will take from you and give back to you on its own terms. Every rancher and farmer who’s ever been humbled by that truth knows exactly what Jason and Melanie are doing in that video — and why they’re doing it without complaint. That’s the covenant. You show up for the animal, the animal feeds your community. It has always worked this way. It is supposed to work this way. What we’re building with the Beef Initiative is a map back to that covenant — for producers and consumers both. AcmeAcres.us is a landmark on that map. Language began with livestock.

“Planned industrial harmony” — that’s the term. Since the 1980s, the federal government has been using regulatory power to pick winners and losers in agriculture based on who complies ideologically. Comply → protected from the rules. Don’t → buried by them. The family farm didn’t lose a fair fight. There was no fair fight. Blue skies the other morning here in North Idaho — cold, but beautiful. If you’ve been following along at AcmeAcres.us, you know this is the kind of place where life happens fast and you just roll with it. My wife Melanie took this video, she’s momma to the all the babies on the farm as you can tell. This is Miss Harriet. She came into the world a few days ago and lost her mama shortly after — we still don’t know exactly what happened. But we snatched her up quick, and she’s been thriving ever since. She’s bottle-fed three times a day. We load her up with supplements too, because without her mama she can get deficient in minerals and vitamins fast. She was a little small at first, but she’s putting on weight and doing great. That’s Miss Ruby photobombing the shot — our cocker spaniel. She takes her feeding assistant duties very seriously. After this shot we took Harriet out for a walk in the sunshine. Let her see the other sheep. She needs to know she’s a sheep — not a human baby. We’ll keep you posted on this little one.
