@chasewnelson And let me tell you, compared with other top-tier public healthcare systems, Taiwan has very low wait times.

Healthcare in Taiwan is phenomenal. I pay $30/mo for National Health Insurance. I’ve never waited over 10 min as a walk-in at this ENT clinic, which costs only $8/visit, and I always leave with a clear diagnosis and treatment. I’m from the US. This is not normal but should be.

Don Knuth! Ok, starting to get surreal “Shock! Shock! I learned yesterday that an open problem I’d been working on for several weeks had just been solved by Claude Opus 4.6 — Anthropic’s hybrid reasoning model that had been released three weeks earlier! It seems that I’ll have to revise my opinions about “generative AI” one of these days. What a joy it is to learn not only that my conjecture has a nice solution but also to celebrate this dramatic advance in automatic deduction and creative problem solving. I’ll try to tell the story briefly in this note.” www-cs-faculty.stanford.edu/~knuth/papers/…

The goal: a verified software stack, open source, mathematically guaranteed correct. The role of the engineer changes but does not shrink. More design, more specification, more thinking. Less debugging, less hoping the tests are sufficient. #LeanLang #LeanProver

In Haneda International Airport of Japan, a Chinese woman was loudly scolding a Taiwanese traveler, telling him “Taiwan belongs to China... before you travel abroad, you need to have a clear understanding of politics first...” After police arrived, the Taiwanese traveller explained the situation to the police using Japanese language, then the Chinese woman told him:“You need to speak human language”... MANY Chinese now feel that they are the rulers of human kind, and the whole world must obey them. Taiwannese, Japanese and other people are just their slaves.

It isn’t propaganda, but fact, and not just for Japan. Beijing may not like it, but Taiwan’s economy and nearby sea lanes are at the heart of global commerce and vital supply chains. The PRC may wish Taiwan was theirs, but it never has been. Sound policy must be based on truth. And the truth is you are the primary and nearly only threat to the peaceful and prosperous status quo across Asia and the Pacific. Do better.

FM Wang Yi: Stop the propaganda that “a Taiwan emergency is a Japanese emergency.” The truth is, to provoke trouble in the name of Taiwan is to invite trouble for Japan.

I think Gym Boss cut straight to the heart of the issue with Takaichi’s recent remarks about Japan stepping in to “defend” Taiwan (loose translation): “You might not know this about the mainland so listen well. If it’s just Taiwan, they probably wouldn’t want to hit us. But if Taiwan teams up with Japan, 10,000% they will do it. And they’ll be keen. Because of the history. Japanese killed 35 million Chinese during WWII and because of their education everyone remembers. China has the capability to take Taiwan by force but they don’t want to make war on other Chinese. Once you team up with the Japanese, you’ll be considered Japanese and there will be no such scruples.” The problem is for politicians all over the world it seems “supporting Taiwan and bashing China” is a cost less way of gaining popularity. But that is not the case for the politicians of Taiwan and Japan.

🇺🇸🇨🇳 U.S. INTEL CONFIRMS CHINA'S TURNING FERRIES INTO WARSHIPS AGAINST TAIWAN China is secretly turning its commercial ferries into floating tanks-and-troops carriers, and the U.S. has receipts. A classified Pentagon report reveals Beijing is building over 70 of these roll-on-roll-off ships by the end of next year, and they’ve already been caught practising beach landings that would embarrass D-Day. They look like civilian cargo ships, but under the hood, they’re reinforced to carry armored vehicles and launch troops straight onto Taiwan’s shores. Satellite images show them linking with brand-new landing barges that snap together like Lego to form floating piers 800 meters long. Taiwan calls it a clear sign of China’s military intentions. 🇨🇳 CHINA’S ROBODOGS FACEPLANT IN TAIWAN INVASION DRILL China’s robot dogs got their big combat debut in a beach assault simulation and immediately got shot. In a state-run exercise, the bots were sent ahead with explosives, supported by drones and combat troops to clear enemy defenses. It backfired. One robot was picked off on the beach, drones failed to suppress fire, and troops had to crawl under heavy fire to plant charges by hand. The drill ended with “heavy casualties” and a reminder: robot dogs might not save you. Source: South China Morning Post, @disclosetv

So do you think, then, that the gov't of the Republic of China in Taipei is actually the rightful gov't of all of China? Should 1.4 billion Chinese now bow down and accept the leadership of a small, rogue gov't that escaped to Taiwan after a long civil war?
Miriam M. Lexmann@MiriamMLex

I hate to break it to @ChinaEUMission, the ‘one-China principle’ isn’t a ‘universal consensus’ - but the UN Resolution 2758 is a living fact. We have every right to build relations with Taiwan, & it was both my honour & privilege as a parliamentarian to host the Vice-President.
