Hong Kong pro-democracy activist #JimmyLai, owner of the now defunct Apple Daily newspaper, has been in solitary confinement since December 2020 following his arrest in August 2020. Lai has faced multiple charges for his activism and journalism, and is serving a sentence of five -years and nine months for a commercial lease violation.
His trial under the National Security Law (NSL) is due to resume in November and he could face life imprisonment if convicted.
We honour him with an #EmptyChair at #PENCcongress and demand his release.

In a casual conversation with this person earlier today, he has revealed that after he was taken into the police station, no formal charges were laid, but the police did refer him to a law regarding "inciting disorderly conduct in public" and had the flower pictured confiscated.
