@ShamashAran Hunger is a feeling. Food insecurity is a resource issue and a structural one.

When i was growing up, I was a beneficiary of free school breakfasts adn lunches until i was 12. I never once went hungry. Even during summer i could get food. Mom suffered more than I did, and i learned this later. While the food wasn't amazing, it was fine. Most kids ate a lot of the stuff during lunch too, they just paid for it. We were "Food insecure" the entire time. I was NEVER hungry. People that conflate one with the other infuriate me.
L@SomeBitchIIKnow

@ShamashAran @ClaytonTuckerTX "Food insecurity" is defined by a sliding scale over 12 months of measurements like "We have food, but not the kind we want." It is absolutely not the same thing as going hungry. ers.usda.gov/media/6422/us-…

@evanwch So actually reading this article and three that it links to, this is “gotcha” journalism at its finest. Rufo claims the $6-$12B in fraud, but the sources he cites only mention $8M. A “fraud expert” said it could be higher and claims the high % of Armenians is fraud…

Because the alternative is to institutionalize severely disabled people. This keeps them with their family members For example, I know someone who has a young disabled son who has to sleep on a ventilator each night to stay alive and this program allows him to live with his family instead of hours away in a care facility If this program weren’t available, she would have to work 40 hours a week to institutionalize him. Because of it, she is able to provide him 24-7 care instead of a stranger

EXCLUSIVE: California spends $30 billion per year paying 800,000 people to cook, clean, shop, and watch television with family members and others. This "in-home care" program operates mostly on the honor system—and loses $6 to $12 billion a year to fraud. city-journal.org/article/califo…

@NinaPanickssery My parents always had plans to retire elsewhere. We’re expecting now and they do not intend to change their plans. They raised us away from family, but my mom stayed home once 3 of 4 was born. Not sure if she would have cont’d to work (she loved it) or preferred to be home.

Genuinely curious—why don’t more people use their own parents/kid’s grandparents for childcare as opposed to daycare/preschool/nannies (which seem more common)? Is it common for boomer grandparents to show disinterest in their grandchildren?

@markvalorian @ArmchairAtty The private company my dad has worked for for nearly 40 years puts employees first. When my brother had cancer at 14, they never told him he had to come into work “or else.” They had insurance send them all the bills for his care. These companies do still exist.

Are we saying they should have awarded some kind of non-PTO paid leave based on emotional distress? Not making a statement on virtue here but that would’ve been a ridiculous expectation at any place I’ve ever worked. I had people die and was expected to set that aside and get to work as well…that’s just how it works in the W2 world.

Imagine you're pregnant. Imagine you learn you have an incompetent cervix that requires surgery. You get the surgery. You also get doctor's orders for bed rest & you ask your boss if you can work from home. But your boss denies it, so you have to go back to the office. You work in the office for a few days, until a desperate call from your husband to the company finally allows you to work from home. And then this...

@chrisdmowrey For some context here, esp if you don’t know IL-9, it is home to one of the largest and oldest Jewish communities in Chicagoland. So I’d be willing to go out on a limb and say he might have different feelings privately, but he needed to reposition to win votes.

Daniel Biss is equally as progressive as Kat Abughazaleh, paying reparations to the people of Evanston, supporting Medicare for all, supporting the green new deal, and having millions of aipac dollars spent against him. But unlike Kat, he grew up in the district and has real experience fighting ice. If you are think he’s a “moderate”, or you’re upset the “progressive” didn’t win, you’re brutally misinformed. Let the people of IL-9 speak, and try to open your ears.

@TheMindScourge I think this is a little too idealistic. Sure, he built libraries — he needed a workforce that could read. Today, these billionaires don’t need us. C also was an enigma. No one else really gave tbis way. Eugenics research in this period was a HUGE philanthropic interest as well.

Modern philanthropy has a general problem in that so much money is spent to such opaque, ill-defined ends Think about the $100 million that Zuckerberg spent in the Newark school system. Or Scott’s $26 billion. In contrast, Carnegie built libraries across the country. You could the result, concretely. In postmodern society, philanthropy ends up focused on cultural and social goals that don’t have defined criteria that are explicit for anyone with eyes This has broader implications, as well. Afghan aid during the US suffered from a surfeit of projects focused on various cultural objectives and deliverables that sounded good in Western capitals but failed to produce recognizable change in Afghan lives
Forbes@Forbes

MacKenzie Scott’s $26 billion giving sprint in seven years, including a record $7.2 billion last year, makes her the third-biggest philanthropist of all-time. She gave more in 2025 than Musk, Page, Ellison and her ex-husband Bezos have in their lifetimes combined. @_MiguelRosario @michelletandler @NewYorkStateAG @Instacart This is not true. Many states and cities have laws on the books that stipulate that tip-eligible workers’ min. wage can make LESS than the state or fed. one. In NC, servers make $2.85/hr. If tipping were a “gesture” we wouldn’t legislate with it in mind.

@RantsOnMute @JoshEakle @JustPlainSmith Hi, genuinely curious: at what speed does a car become a lethal weapon? At what range does a gun? Getting behind the wheel of a vehicle is one of the riskiest things we can do. Are all of us who drive armed? If so, why aren’t consequences higher?

Whatever led up to it, a group of armed men in body armor shot a 37-year-old unarmed mother in the face. Even if you support ICE, the normal human response is horror that children lost their mother today. The evil response is to rush to signal loyalty to ICE and celebrate it. I’m not religious, but “demonic” is the only word that fits this administration.

Multiple outlets have confirmed the victim, Renee Nicole Good, was a Minneapolis resident - because they did more than glance at footage and throw out takes. Journalists, for their many faults, are trained in how to get the story right & held accountable when they don’t. Dustin and many like him (yes, on both sides) get their impressions, dopamine hits and payouts regardless. They know what their followers want and see the world through that lens. The incentive structure is broken and needs to be fixed before we all grift and outrage each other into oblivion.

@BolonelSanders @IvanaDGreco I can answer this! Food banks and food pantries have better purchasing power. They have relationships with wholesalers and can often pool their resources to buy large bulk orders that bring prices way below what you’d buy a jar of peanut butter for.

@IvanaDGreco I have heard that in general it is better to give cash/check to food banks (if able) because then 1. They have more direct control over getting what they need, and 2. Some food pantries get discounts. Is this true or was I misinformed?

Just in case this is a useful thought: if you are interested in donating to your local food pantry, it can be easy to add a couple of non-perishable needed items to your grocery store order/trip and just leave them in the car. Your local library or religious institution probably has a collection box, and you can put the donations in at the same time as you take the kids for a library visit or religious services. Apologies if this is so obvious it’s stupid, but it can be hard to engage in giving in a way that kids actually notice - they don’t see you writing a check, but they can personally be involved in buying the jar of peanut butter and putting it in the bin, or what have you. Online you can find lists of what food pantries always need - some of it is not obvious, like the fact that they prefer pop top cans for people who don’t have openers or can’t operate can openers easily.

@ManyMoonzz @umasalam @AmyMcGrathKY This is because the standards changed. 30 years ago, you could get your Associates (APN), but as health care became more complex & patient-centered, the standard shifted to BSN. BSNs get clinical training and learn how to problem solve with a team, not just carry out dr orders.

Can someone explain how a theologian is considered more “professional” than a nurse practitioner?   As part of the “Big Beautiful Bill” the Department of Education just proposed a reclassification of a “professional degree,” and it means fewer students will qualify for the higher loan limits they need for grad school. Programs being excluded include many fields dominated by women like healthcare, counseling, and social work. This isn’t a coincidence. This is a way to quietly push women out of professional careers.   Limiting who can pursue advanced degrees in critical professions will only deepen the workforce shortages we’re already facing.

People say shit like this but we currently have a far-reaching all encompassing surveillance state that’s constantly monitoring you and nobody even thinks about it. Government working with social media and corporations like Palantir. That’s not what Zohran is talking about, he’s saying like if you go to Government with your problem.. it should be responsive in even in small ways that tangibly make life better.
