@tutubuslatinus Charles Hoole, 17th century Yorkshire schoolmaster, recommended what he called a “double translation” - pupils translate a letter of Cicero into English and a week later they translate their English version back into Latin and compare this with the original.

My first year students are working on their Latin writing. They are currently translating sections of Lingua Latina into English, then closing their text and translating it back into Latin. By then comparing the two, they are noticing their errors and learning from them. 🙂
