I agree with the spirit of not being false. There are still traffic laws and motor vehicle requirements for being on the road. It you only ban the “pretext” motivated stops, how does that get enforced? The end result of this is going to be victims who don’t get help and murders that could’ve been prevented.

They voted to recommend that the 5-person police commission change department policy severely curtailing “pre-textual traffic stops”—stops for minor violations like a brake lamp out, when the officer really wants to check for guns and / or warrants—unless there is an imminent public safety threat.

The incident was captured on surveillance. Police say the man tried to steal several vehicles by force yesterday afternoon, before trying this one near Highway 66 and Dairy Road. A majority of the family members were inside the car when a carjacker tried to steal it. The carjacker was shot and killed by the father during a struggle captured on video. Surveillance video shows a man attacking and trying to carjack a family of eight in Garland on Sunday afternoon, before the father shoots and kills him. Tatiana Starks manages Garland Smoke and Vape in a shopping center near the incident. "You could definitely tell that he was not in his right state of mind," said Starks. "I’m just glad that the man was able to protect himself and his family." Garland Police Department says the carjacker initially crashed into two other vehicles. "While we were responding to the scene, we received more information that the driver of that car had exited and immediately began physically trying to get into other vehicles in the parking lot," said Lt. Pedro Barineau. Starks says she saw the man breaking into several vehicles at a gas station, so she took cell phone footage. "He like tried to get into several different cars," she said. She stopped recording as the man began walking across the street toward her. "He ended up going into their car." The family of eight was unaware of what was happening, and what was about to happen. The father struggles as the carjacker is trying to drive off with the family’s car with family members still inside. After nearly a minute of struggle, the carjacker, who’s in the driver’s seat, is shot by the father while he stands outside the car and near the passenger side door. Police do not expect to file charges against the father. "It seemed to be self-defense," said Lt. Barineau. "It kind of all happened like really fast." Starks is grateful to be talking about a story in which no victims were hurt. "It’s just a blessing that the kids and the family walked away with no injuries," she said. Garland police say they are still working to identify the suspect. Police did not recover any weapons on him, but they say he was absolutely using force to try and steal multiple vehicles and at the moment, that father did not know if that person was armed.

Current law grants citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil, even if their parents are here illegally. That’s not what the 14th Amendment intended. Some kind of jury protest should be had here. If had to serve on a jury that restricted the findings and decisions we were able to make to these minor options I would have to protest. It wouldn’t be pretty but it’s as substantial an activism (though unprotected) as finding a defendant not guilty as a form of activism. Just communicate my reasons and then walk away. There’d be a contempt charge but it’d honestly be morally preferable to being a part of such a miscarriage of justice.

That we have here “insular minorities exist who lack access to political process” is just an assumption that needs to be made for the argument to be made. This is total Marxist nonsense that has nothing to do with the actual facts of the case or any like situation of a child’s mental health. Talk therapy is also never hostile by its nature and the deliberate coloring of it as “conversion therapy” is fiercely anti-factual.

@jonatanpallesen You don't understand the cases. The basis of Equal Protection is that discrete, insular minorities exist who lack access to political process. SCOTUS has authority to bar actions based on animus against them. Conversion therapy is motivated by animus, puberty blockers are not

It is rather extreme to have such an inept ideologue as Justice Jackson on the Supreme Court. The Democrats should be embarrassed. Here is another clear example: How is it possible to believe (as Justice Jackson does) that talk therapy can be banned, but puberty blockers and hormone treatment cannot? (As she opined in United States v. Skrmetti.) Puberty blockers and hormone treatment are a far more invasive treatment than talk therapy. So if talk therapy can be banned, puberty blockers can too. There is even a further free speech argument in the case for not being able to ban talk therapy. It is quite clear that she makes her rulings not based on the law, or on logical consistency, but on her personal ideological alignment. The use of puberty blockers is viewed favorably by many progressive, while conversion talk therapy is not. That is why she makes logically inconsistent rulings.
