An attempt by @mschlapp to hype up the CPAC crowd goes horribly wrong — "How many of you would like to see impeachment hearings?" [cheers] "That was the wrong answer..."

Republicans love to talk about the debt, but all they do is spike it. Today they are holding a secret meeting with Trump regime on how to force through the first installment on financing his reckless war –borrowing another $200 billion. Republicans refuse to hold a single public hearing on any aspect of this war and the bill will only grow as we are in week 4 of Trump’s supposed 4-5 week war. No end in sight as taxpayers face the prospect of another $2 trillion war in the Middle East and more lost lives.

I’m often asked to describe a typical day in Congress. Well, there really isn’t a typical day. While not all are as crowded as today, many parts of each day usually are. So fortunate that Central Texans have given me the opportunity to deal with such a broad range of important issues. After a day like this, I’m not thinking about next year, I’m thinking about tomorrow and the next day, and each week in which I can join with others in the continued struggle to save our democracy and see that a little fairness peeks through all of the ongoing wrongdoing.

This is an embarrassing error by the WaPo editorial board. Under no definition is it true that Sweden spends less than 1% of GDP on public pensions. At minimum, it is 7.8% of GDP.

This chart is misleading. Social security is middle of the pack when it comes to high end benefits. Here's a standardized comparison at 200% of the average wage, including mandatory social insurance. A high earning French couple would get more than an American one.

But also he said the expectation is that the whole package is deficit neutral, which, if it holds, makes a tough sell for items on any tax cut wish list.

Practically everything he found was price-gouging from contractors or outsourcing. The mindbending part of DOGE was that it was going to increase public spending by cutting public staff. Building state capacity saves money.

Government must deliver for working people—and every dollar in our budget should work as hard as they do. That’s why I directed every agency to cut waste and help close our budget gap. Here’s some of what we found.

GOP Senator admits Trump is the reason for TSA shutdown, long airport lines: "The Democrats have offered to open up everything but ICE. ... Senator Thune submitted that to President Trump. As is his right, he said 'No deals with the Democrats.' It would have worked. We could have had TSA paid by the end of the week. But the President said 'No deal.'"

According to the NYT-Siena poll--widely recognized as the gold standard of published public opinion polls--about 2% of voters say taxes are the thing they worry the most about affording. Something to think about when weighing how to allocate dollars in a legislative agenda.

Twenty years before Donald Trump was posting AI images of himself as a king, the internet was learning how to meme by exaggerating the masculine superiority of Chuck Norris. What began innocently with "Chuck Norris Facts" has evolved into MAGA’s empire of slop. jacobin.com/2026/03/chuck-…

IRAN - was there an imminent threat? I asked @SpeakerJohnson about fellow Republican Joe Kent's letter resigning as counterterrorism director and writing that "Iran posed no imminent threat". Johnson gave strong pushback -- see below.
Jake Sherman@JakeSherman

This is as far as @SpeakerJohnson has gone on Iran: “Had the president waited [to attack iran], I am personally convinced that we would have mass casualties of Americans, service members and others, and our installations would have been dramatically damaged.”
