I am pleased to announce that I have updated the online versions of my 2 textbooks (see probml.github.io/pml-book/): I fixed all issues listed on github, added some new references (esp on LLMs), and made a few other small tweaks.

Today we are open-sourcing SynJax which is a JAX library for efficient probabilistic modeling of structured objects (sequences, segmentations, alignments, trees...). It can compute everything you would expect from a probability distribution: argmax, samples, marginals, entropy...

We need NLG models that can indicate when they are wrong and can handle language variation. A good representation of uncertainty is crucial. But where does uncertainty come from? How to represent it? How does it power NLG models? We unpack this arxiv.org/pdf/2307.15703… 🧵👇1/7

I’ll be presenting this work on sampling-based minimum Bayes risk decoding today at #EMNLP2022! If you’re interested feel free to pass by our poster at the Atrium at 14.00 today :)

Check out our latest work on minimum Bayes risk decoding for NMT! We show that MBR is a robust decision rule and sampling-based approximations scale well with more computation. Unlike MAP, more computation always improves translation quality. paper: arxiv.org/abs/2108.04718 1/4
