BREAKING Somalia’s political leaders gathered this morning at the Office of the President, otherwise known as @TheVillaSomalia. President @HassanSMohamud hosted them to discuss the way forward on the electoral model, among other issues such as drought and security. The FGS President and the leaders of Puntland and Jubaland, as well as other Mogadishu-based presidential candidates, accepted the President’s offer to meet at the Presidency, which they agreed to instead of an independent venue, as some had preferred. We knew this was coming. Meanwhile, a mere five days ago, on 19 February, someone in Kenya — whose name I cannot mention because he said so — tweeted: “Somalia’s electoral and constitutional dispute enters a dangerous phase, risk of violence mounting fast.” Right. There is a reason this space is called @AnalystSomalia.

One of my friends told me he recently visited Hargeisa, Somalia, without getting a Somalia e-visa. When I asked how that was possible, he said he flew to Addis Ababa, stayed there a few nights on an Ethiopian e-visa, then took a local flight to Jigjiga and crossed by car via Togwajaale into Somalia. The whole journey took about six hours, instead of the 1 hour 25 minutes it would’ve taken if he’d just flown directly from Addis to Hargeisa with a Somalia e-visa. I couldn’t help thinking — that’s a lot of travel gymnastics just to avoid a Somalia e-visa! You’re happy to get an Ethiopian one, but not Somalia’s?

The so called Sabean script originated in the land of Punt, rather than in Yemen. The gap between the oldest Proto Sabean in Puntland dated of the 11th - 10th century BC and the earliest Sabean script is more than 3/4 centuries.
