Everything I gathered said it was primarily school prez Darryll Pines and Colleen Sorem, who was the temporary AD because Damon Evans had left. It was an ill-advised move by Pines to give that assignment to a staffer who'd never made a major hire and seemingly had one foot out the door to join Evans at SMU.
UMD athletics have not thrived under Pines.
