In a world-first achievement, CERN scientists have successfully transported antimatter by road. On March 24, 2026, researchers from the BASE experiment at CERN moved a cloud of 92 antiprotons in a specialized portable cryogenic Penning trap — loaded onto a truck and driven across the laboratory’s main site. To prevent the instant annihilation that occurs when antimatter contacts ordinary matter, the antiprotons were held in a near-perfect vacuum inside a superconducting magnetic container cooled to approximately −269°C (−452°F) with liquid helium. The entire 850–1000 kg apparatus is designed to withstand vibrations and bumps, proving that these extremely delicate particles can survive transport outside a controlled laboratory environment. This groundbreaking test marks the first time antimatter has been safely relocated outside a controlled laboratory environment. While the drive was a short loop around CERN’s campus, it represents a crucial step toward the long-term goal: delivering antiprotons to quieter, specialized laboratories across Europe. By moving these ultra-sensitive particles away from the magnetic noise of CERN’s accelerators, scientists will be able to conduct far more precise measurements of antimatter properties.
