@srchengn As a native Detroiter that has lived in other cites in Michigan outside of the Metro Detroit region, this is definitely needed as those cities often get overlooked because of Detroit. Flint, Saginaw, and Muskegon are examples where there is a rich Black community and history.

I know Detroiters can have main character syndrome but I strongly encourage us to learn more deeply about the other 16 other majority black cities in Michigan. There’s so much rich history & shared experiences to learn from

@brandonousley Between the American Idol appearance and his 3121 perfume that was released a year later, this was a fun era for me as a growing Prince fan because he “reclaimed” his mainstream acceptance while remaining true to his fanbsse. I did a write up for his album. A gem indeed.

Album of the day. What I admired most about Prince's later work was his ability to churn out contemporary music that didn't stray too far from his retro Minneapolis funk roots. While he was miles away from his creative peak by this point, he still made worthy music that more or less showcased his incredible pop craftsmanship. This is greatly evident on solid late-career gems, such as his 31st (yes, he was that prolific) studio album, 2006's 3121, which was released 20 years ago today. Similar to its successful predecessor, 2004's Musicology, 3121 was consciously helmed as a radio-friendly, mainstream release meant to revisit facets of his past glories while whetting the appetites of the large pop following he won over again. Only this one went a few steps ahead of Musicology, thanks to the Purple One stretching out and toying with Latin-tinged numbers ("Te Amo Corazón," "The Dance," "Get on the Boat"), mininalist, futuristic funk ("Black Sweat," "Love"), optimistic love songs ("Beautiful, Loved, and Blessed"), guitar-laden rockers ("Fury"), and bedroom burners ("Satisfied," "Incense and Candles"). It's the kind of album a veteran makes when they have nothing left to prove. And thanks to Prince, it never fails to be an engaging portrait of a master at the top of his game, making well-crafted music in the fourth decade of his storied career and having fun doing it.

@BeyondTheMemes I’d even add that KCI and Jojo as a duo captured some of Boyz II Men “pop” fan base with their two 90s albums IMO which added to their lane being minimized during that time as well.

Here’s another controversial take: I know a lotta ppl look at Boyz II Men’s commercial decline in the late 90s and blame the rise of white boy bands. I don’t, tho. I’ve always maintained that by their 3rd album, folks had moved on to the Dru Hills, 112s and BlackStreets.

@BLACKCOTTONCNDY Controversy, while it has its share of great songs such as the title track, “ Do Me, Baby”, “Private Joy” and “Let’s Work” is not a very good album should be considered among the “weakest” of his 80s releases. 🤷🏾‍♂️

@iamslickrick01 How this album and artist continues to be lauded over one solo release is beyond me? On another note, I sincerely hope that Luther gets inducted. Now that’s a worthy nomination and induction!

@BeyondTheMemes Completely agree. If it wasn’t for that brief opening track when that coin drops on GRADT,and I’d say that 50 would be in this category with “What Up Gangsta”. But the All Eyez on Me has great openers on both discs.

Ambitionz As A Ridah is an all time opening track and that’s in any genre. Always loved that All Eyez On Me has no intro. Just opens with Pac at his most sinister, fully embracing the villain role. No setup. No lead-in. Just… “I won’t deny it…I’m a straight ridah…” 🎶

@CaseyRain Pac and Johnny J were the equivalent of MJ and Quincy, Janet with Jam and Lewis or other hot producer/artist combo. I’m fully convinced that they would have continued to make magic had they both lived long.

@DuretteGino What I love about the 1999 tour (and album) was that Prince was on the cusp of superstardom which meant he had something to prove. The 83 shows where he was in bigger arenas seemed more refined in my opinion versus the earlier shows which felt more experimental IMO.

For those wondering where I’ve been: I have been diagnosed with Stage 4 pancreatic cancer, commonly referred to as a “death sentence” and had two other serious ailments which put me in ICU for several days. It was sudden. I’ve literally been on my back for weeks. Bless you all.

@Albumism Once. July 2014 in New Orleans at Essence Fest. At the time I was a decade plus fan and it was an out of body experience. Saw him two years later at Paisley Park when he was standing behind me watching The Time perform. Miss him terribly.
