They’d sit me, a little boy then, somewhere on stage with a Conga, otherwise I’d be running around during the shows. An 11-piece acoustic band, captivating thousands… not just with music, but with a rare ability to connect with people, at a time when Bihu wasn’t fully accepted by some sections of society. Coming from a Vaishnavite family, it was even more challenging for him. Yet, he broke through those barriers… standing up to both family and societal norms… to take Bihu from the interiors of Upper Assam to the rest of the state and across the world. Traditionally performed by young men and women, along with the fertility of the land and harvest, Bihu celebrates love, youth, spring and courtship. There was even a time in the late 19th century when some appealed to the British government and sought to have it banned. Today, Bihu is our identity… our pride. And that’s why people fondly call my father, Khagen Mahanta, the Bihu Samrat. I hope we continue to preserve the true spirit and nuance of Bihu songs and dance, and keep its authentic form alive.
