Limelight- Rush- Cover by Brody Dolyniuk and Nina D I just saw that today is Geddy Lee’s birthday, so I thought I would repost the cover Brody and I recorded of Limelight in his honor, and for those who are new to my page and may not have heard it yet. Nina’s Notes 🎶: I’ve wanted a Rickenbacker bass most of my life (and largely because of Geddy). Last year Brody almost forgot my birthday, so in the 11th hour, he came through the best way he could- with the Ricky. The first thing we did was record a Rush tune. When discussing the repertoire, Brody suggested Limelight because it would be great double duty for me, covering Geddy’s driving bass line and translating Alex’s sublime solo to violin. The two of us recorded every part you hear, with myself on bass and electric violin, and Brody on vocals, guitar, drums, and keys. I know that Geddy didn’t use the Rickenbacker to record this particular song, but I really wanted to play my new bass, and you get the idea. As both of us are multi- instrumentalists, our approach to learning our parts came from totally different places. Brody learned everything by ear, and classical me transcribed Geddy’s bass line and Alex’s solo note for note into notation and memorized from there. Finding the ISO stems on YouTube helped both of us to be as accurate as possible. When practicing the bass line, I wanted to try and get a Geddy-like sound right out of my fingers and the instrument before processing the sound at all. Not easy to do. That’s really the best way to do it, but my hands are ridiculously small. I actually grew out my nails on the right hand and added multiple layers of thick polish to beef up the sound a bit. To learn Alex’s guitar solo, the part that took the longest was trying to figure out where to use portamento and where to use the whammy for the slides, and which intervals to use for the whammy. I ended up using a combination of both techniques, and really tried to capture the languid yet visceral vibe of the solo. Our little cover from our home studio ended up being featured in Ultimate Guitar magazine, No Treble magazine (a bass publication, much to my surprise and delight, seeing as I’m not really a bass player), and best of all, my performance of the guitar solo on electric violin earned approval from Alex himself which of course made my entire year. This was really fun to learn and record. If it were up to me I would be happy to just learn Rush songs. Well, Genesis too. And Frank Zappa. But mostly Rush. Getting to play bass AND the guitar solos makes it extra special. And…Brody can sing anything by anyone, at an insane level, so collaborating with him is always a real treat, and has been for long before we were married and he was buying me Rickenbacker basses. Happy Birthday, Geddy!
