I don’t think that marriage should be a sign that you’re ready for children. Yes, you can get married but are you ready for children? Many women are unfit to be a mother because they’re all ill from their own parents. It takes a lot of gentleness, kindness and respect to raise a child. These are qualities you don’t have for yourself not to talk of a little human.” - Lady

My husband earns around 800k every month. Out of that, he gives me 200k for feeding and running the house, 60k for the children’s school needs, and another 100k for light bills, medicine, and little unexpected expenses. In total, about 360k comes into the home monthly, while he keeps the rest. Recently, I became curious about our finances and asked him how much he had saved over the years, but he avoided the conversation. Later, I checked and discovered he had about 14M saved. Honestly, after more than three years of work and all the sacrifices we’ve made as a family, I expected it to be much more. What confused me most is that my husband is not someone who spends recklessly. He eats at home most of the time, only buys lunch occasionally at work, and aside from helping family members once in a while and paying the children’s school fees, there’s nothing extravagant he does. When I asked him calmly to explain how the savings were only 14M, the conversation turned into an argument. Instead of answering me, he started bringing up my own salary and asking whether he had ever questioned the money in my account. Since then, the house has been tense and silent. This morning, he even said if I’m unhappy, I’m free to leave the marriage because he will never discuss his money with me. Now I’m honestly confused. Is it wrong for a wife to want transparency about the future of her family? Or did I overstep boundaries by checking his account and questioning his savings?

The Human Condition... Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago was a friend of my late father, Alhaji Tijjani Usman Bulldozer (APC Party Chairman of Suleja LGA). Even after my father passed away, I continued to stay in touch with him regularly. Every Friday, I would greet him because he was a cheerful person with a great sense of humor. I really enjoyed talking with him. Even after he won his primary elections, we still spoke often. I called to congratulate him. At one point, I told him I was interested in getting a job with the Nigeria Customs Service, and he asked me to send him my slip, saying Insha Allah he would try to help. But around that time, he became busy with the governorship campaign, so I had to let the matter go. After he became governor, we spoke one last time. He told me that from then on I should text him instead — you know, being a governor is no small responsibility. Later, after he became governor, destiny made us meet again in Bida. It happened because his security team and I were staying at the same hotel. My colleagues and I had traveled from Lagos for work on behalf of our company. We met the governor, and he recognized me. He welcomed me warmly, introduced me to some people, and was genuinely happy to see me. I was very happy too. Then he called the guy whose picture I circled — his name is “Kolo.” He told him to collect my phone number and said that whenever I wanted to see him, I should contact Kolo. He also instructed them to give me some money, and afterward I returned to Lagos. After I completed my NYSC, I messaged Kolo, but he claimed he didn’t know me. I sent him this picture, and he admitted it was indeed him, but he still acted like he didn’t recognize me. I tried everything I could, but he refused to help me make any connection. Eventually, I just left the matter alone and said to myself that if it is destined, Allah will create another opportunity for us to meet again. What still confuses me is why he refused to connect me with the governor. The only thing I would have asked for was a job. But he completely refused. Still, I believe that if it is meant to be, one day I will meet the governor again — whether he likes it or not. ~ El-Muaz

I used to think we have really bright talents in Nigeria but I now know they’re not up to the global standards — Moniepoint CEO, Eniolorunda, laments Founder of Moniepoint, Tosin Eniolorunda, has sparked conversation online after opening up about the company’s struggle to find qualified Nigerian talent despite hundreds of job openings. Speaking candidly, Eniolorunda revealed that the fintech made a bold move in 2024 to hire only Nigerians, but the outcome has been tough. “In 2024, we made a decision that we will no longer hire from any other place than Nigeria. And we chopped the cane in 2025,” he said. According to him, the company currently has about 500 vacancies but is struggling to fill them. “Not only could we not find people at the quality and the quantity we needed them, the few people that we found were not up to the global standards,” he added. The tech boss stressed that the challenge goes beyond local competition, noting: “I’m competing globally, my biggest competition, they are from China.” Eniolorunda didn’t hold back in pointing fingers at systemic issues, particularly Nigeria’s education system and shifting social values. “I used to feel like Nigerians are really, really bright, but I am honestly beginning to feel like we need to do something to prevent the general IQ of this country from going lower,” he said, expressing deep concern. He also blamed rising social media influence and trends like “Yahoo Yahoo” and “h@okup culture” for shaping the mindset of young people. “The level that people are reasoning in this country is not as high as it used to be,” he lamented. Despite the criticism, Eniolorunda maintained that Nigerians still have potential, urging a reset in values and investment in human capital. “We have it in us, all we just need to do is develop our human capital and change this mentality,” he said, while also pointing to brain drain as a major challenge.

@renoomokri Dear @renoomokri, if the Canadian government privatise their power sector and yet their country is in darkness, do you think their government will be paying influentials (through ambassadorial appointments) to defend the darkness? Or will they fix it instead?

This fellow lives in Canada, a country I've been to multiple times. In Canada, is it the Canadian central government that provides electricity? No. Electricity in Canada is provided by the private sector and the states (provinces). In Western nations that have solved their power challenges, it is the private sector and provincial governments (states and local governments) that have led the process. This is exactly what President Tinubu wants to replicate in Nigeria. Already, power generation in Nigeria is privatised. The Federal Government does not generate power. Almost all power in Nigeria is generated by either the private sector or the states. For example, Olorunsogo Power Plant and Omotosho I Power Plant have been privatised and are now owned by Dr Adedeji Adeleke, Davido's father. Other power plants, like Geregu, are also privately owned. Until late last year, it was owned by Femi Otedola. The Nigerian Federal Government, like other central governments, such as those of the United Kingdom and the United States, does not have the capacity to run successful power-generating companies because it is not the business of government to be in business. That is why, since the Nigerian power sector was privatised on November 1, 2013, the Ministry of Power's budget has significantly decreased. The role of government is to regulate the sector. And that is being done through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission. It is only the Transmission Grid that is publicly owned, and even that is scheduled for privatisation. But even at that, the grid can only transmit what is generated. The main challenge of power generation in Nigeria is that many Nigerians expect power without paying electricity bills, which has seriously dampened investor confidence in the sector. Privately owned power-generating companies are owed trillions by consumers. Please fact-check me. And they even face power theft through illegal connections. Nigeria has one of the world's worst, if not the absolute worst, records of electricity bill collection. It may surprise you to note that a huge number of persons in prisons in Nigeria are there for beating up electricity bill collectors, bypassing meters, and assaulting technicians sent to disconnect them after repeatedly refusing to pay their bills. In light of this, how can private funds spent by Seyi Tinubu on his personal initiative, the City Boy Movement, be blamed for the state of electricity in Nigeria? After all, the President has created the enabling environment for states to get involved in the power sector, and as Governor of Lagos, he pioneered Nigeria's first State Government-owned Independent Power Projects, having built: Alausa Independent Power Plant (10.4 Mw) Akute Independent Power Plant (12.55Mw) Lagos Island 1&2 Independent Power Plant (10Mw) Mainland Independent Power Plant (8.8Mw) Lekki Peninsula Integrated Power Project (6Mw) Island IPP located in Marina (10MW) All these and other projects were built by the Bola Tinubu Lagos State Government, in partnership with the private sector, although some were completed by his predecessors, and they have resulted in Lagos's economy being 12 times larger than it was in 1991, when it stopped being Nigeria's capital. I know it is easier to just criticise blindly and insult than to engage in criticism thinking, but please, when we want to be critical, we must understand the industry and sector we are criticising, and not just speak from the grandstand.
