@prem_thakker We will face with the consequences of a mosquito-less world with grace, with courage and with firm resolve, but we will — we must! — face it

@JoshKraushaar It’s true, and now all of the political points he was hoping to extract from his arrest in the West Bank have been erased

@JHWeissmann I think that’s exactly right. I also think people expected her to editorialize more and got mad when she, a reporter, didn’t and instead just reported the facts of her story

I think the reactions to this tweet are a reminder that most of America and the commentariat have entirely lost the ability to read subtext.

Like anyone who’s spent any time around politics, I have many Lindsey Graham stories. This is perhaps my favorite… I was covering Congress (Best! Beat! Ever!) for the NYT when the Mother Emanuel shooting happened in Charleston. It was summer, but I was wearing pants and a sweater that day because it was always SO freezing in the Capitol. Anyhow, news of the shooting came down, and the DC Bureau chief called me with an order: Get yourself to Charleston ASAP and glue yourself to Graham’s side. She wanted a piece on the senator grappling with the unimaginable. So I headed straight to the airport, arriving in Charleston with just my backpack and what I’d be wearing to work that day, and linked up with Graham. He had me meet him at a restaurant, where I told him I needed to shadow him for the next 48 hours. And he looked at me, with amused distaste, and said: “You are sticky. And you are icky. If you want to shadow me, go buy some nice new clothes—maybe a dress—and take a shower, and then we’ll talk.” (He was not wrong; I was sweaty and gross). So I drove to a local big box store, bought a dress (he seemed to have a strong preference for a dress), and spent the next few days with him, resulting in this piece (which, for reasons not worth getting into, ended up being fairly different than the original assignment): nytimes.com/2015/06/20/us/…

With all due respect to @mattyglesias, the last few weeks have suggested to me that the center-left cares more about beating down the left than they do about beating Trump. We've seen the re-introduction of "woke" tropes by the Democratic establishment, weaponized against Abdul El-Sayed to suggest he's some kind of mysogonist, without any actual evidence. To accuse a Muslim man of misogyny is a classic trope, of course. If I was someone who cared about the future of the Democratic Party and it's ability to compete with the GOP, I'd be more enthusiastic about people like Abdul and Zohran, who model a positive "clean-living" masculinity. I'd be be enthusiastic about their ability to turn out young voters who are otherwise disaffected by a party that doesn't seem to want to listen to them. They're also practicing Muslims who respect the role of religion in public life, something we need more of in an overly secularized Democratic Party. This doesn't mean that everyone has to like Abdul or want him to win. Even if you want him to lose, you should see that he has something genuinely positive to offer to the Democratic Party. When the left wants to beat establishment candidates, it's called "factionalism." When the establishment wants to beat the left, it's not called that. It's just normal and unaccounted for. Take @neeratanden for example. Her feed is mostly about her disdain for the left. I don't see how this is constructive. And those of us who are not part of the Democratic establishment shouldn't concede too much ground on these points. I worry, though, that we have.

Why would you write this story down and hit publish? Why would you proudly share it?

@capitalweather ok but I've noticed that there seem to have been more extreme heat breaks this summer than last. Is there something to that? Last summer didn't hit 100F as much, but felt like it was above 95F for longer stretches?

Just how hot has this summer been? DC is already tied for the eighth-most 100-degree days on record—and this week's forecast could push 2026 into the top five. Take a look at the numbers: capitalweather.com/upcoming-heat-…

@TylerDinucci I wonder about this a lot: do you think Obama still would’ve tried to block him from challenging Hillary if Beau hadn’t been dying in the lead up to a spring 2015 announcement?

The last few months saw wins by Randy Villegas, Mai Vang, Angela Gonzales-Torres, Chris Rabb, Adam Hamawy, Analilia Mejia, Claire Valdez, Darializa Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander, Melat Kiros and yes, in a blowout, Graham Platner. You got Platner, but otherwise you’re getting wrecked this summer, despite burning through tens of millions of dollars.

According to @ryangrim, after multiple scandals Platner was the safe, obvious pick for the general. Maybe people should be a little suspect of your push for candidates who have never won any primary or ever faced a Republican in their lives.
