I am a forest, and a night of dark trees: but he who is not afraid of my darkness, will find banks full of roses under my cypresses.

@AdamCC92 You jest, but this is exactly what they did in Sweden. Hard to imagine a bigger downgrade.

I'm starting to think the whole assisted dying thing was based in Starmer's desire to commit suicide and having no existing process to follow

@Italian347 I’ve long believed they should keep a straight face for their portrait photos, like as would’ve been tradition for paintings

what gets me is the uniparty ran out of ideas a decade ago and nobody noticed. mass immigration was the answer to everything: demographics, growth, labour shortages, pension funding. it delivered none of it, made some things worse and the cupboard is now bare.
Andy@PositivFuturist

It’s political nativism or it’s the end of Europe as we know it. Liberals can’t continue to pretend their ideas are working or that there are any left to implement. Things are happening.. and I hope they will accelerate.

Never stop saying "dozen" and "half dozen". Never stop using the word you read in an old novella. Never stop using your regional jargon. Don't succumb to an internationalized English stripped of its whimsy and romanticism in the name of streamlining global commerce.
Anon Opin.@anon_opin

I don't understand the point of using the term "dozen". It means 12, so just say 12? It's even worse when people say or type "half a dozen". Just say 6 or six.

The Rosetta Stone was used a piece of cement on a fortification before the French found it and realized the magnitude of their discovery. The Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs went untranslated for 1400 before a Frenchman deciphered them. The modern day “Egyptians” wouldn’t even know half of the ancient Egyptian history they pretend is theirs if it wasn’t for British and French historians who documented and translated it. Thanks to them they now marvel at being inheritors of a great and ancient civilization. Now ask yourself, how many more artifacts of ancient civilizations we’ve lost to time because the supposed “descendants” couldn’t be fucked to see their inherent value and preserve them? If it wasn’t for the British museum we’d probably see Tutankhamens cock hanging off a rack in some carpet merchants stall. Thank God for it and may not a single artifact ever be returned to Egypt.

@CaribbeanRythms You've taken away the whole history of Egypt, now you're complaining?

As a boy, I was at a boarding school very close to Parliament. I took the opportunity to go and watch the debates in both houses from the visitors' gallery; at that time it was not widely known that one could do this, so it was easy and quick to get in. I saw all the famous politicians of the 1970s. But what was self-evident, even to a teenager, was that whereas the elected members of parliament were out to score points in their speeches, before voting according to pre-set ideas, the hereditary Lords were genuinely issued in persuasion and had open minds. This was because, being hereditary, they were beholden to no-one and no party; ironically, they were much more representative of ordinary people with common sense than their political colleagues in the lower house.

@Philmsh79 @TobyDurant @93vintagejones I’m disputing that they’re making decisions which impact millions. They’re whipped. Their decisions have been made for them. And even when the decision is theirs, it’s made before going down the voting aisles and having some drinks makes no difference to their voting ability.

This is because the public believe MPs are making a genuine & informed choice each time they vote, rather than being told by the whips. If they knew MPs were herded through like cattle in a milking shed, they wouldn’t care.
