I'm working on a video about memory allocation in C atm, and it's really hitting me just how insane it was that my university professors had us making millions of tiny allocations with malloc, then trying to find leaks using valgrind. No mention of arenas / static allocation.

@DMeville Yeah I have only heard bad things about Git LFS. Maybe you could take a look at Ark VCS, which seems to have been made as a better replacement for SVN ?

I like SVN. Last time I looked at Git it seemed complicated to deal with (non-text) assets and LFS stuff or whatever. Is that better now? I do the most basic version control ever. I work solo. Only working on a single branch. Just shoving all my files in the repo.

My server host that I've been using SVN with for all my version control (for the last decade!) apparently decided they are fully removing SVN support. I found out today when I couldn't connect to my repo! So annoyed, having to deal with this instead of getting actual work done :|

I am going to stop engaging with anything to do with mass-market consumer AI products, negative or positive, for the foreseeable future, due to fatigue... My departing thoughts: The current wave of general consumer AI products is almost solely used to mimic high-level skills, such as writing, programming, musicianship, artistry etc. The majority of people don't reach proficiency in such skills because of the time investment required - most people would rather relax, seek entertainment, or revel in comfort rather than grind a skill. I used to play music in bands, on stage, to large crowds, sometimes using various different instruments. People would say things like "I wish I had the talent to play an instrument" My canned response was always "it is not talent - I practiced for years". Did those people then go and practice for years? Did they stop wishing they could play an instrument? Consider those questions an exercise for the reader :) One thing a person gains through years of practice and grinding, that AI cannot provide, is taste. With heavy direction, in its current state, AI can make a cheap mockery of high skill outputs. It can give people the feeling of arriving at a high-skill output, which will intoxicate those who have never experienced or earned it. It will typically severely disappoint those who have. In fairness, it can indeed augment those with taste and understanding of the context of its usage. It can help those who are deeply knowledgeable about a subject expand their horizons by presenting more data points for that person to synthesize. Those with taste, earned from the grind, who care to treat the technology with the nuance and restraint that the technology demands. This is not most people. I also fear that some of those high-skill people will fall into laziness as a result of having access to consumer AI products. Having a history of work ethic doesn't necessarily mean it will be maintained if a shortcut is available - it just so happens that high work ethic was the only way to get access to high-skill outputs historically. Skill will atrophy if it isn't ardently protected. It will remain a severe disservice to those who do not have taste, those who are looking for shortcuts. I am interested in seeing, hearing, or perceiving high quality work from high-skill (or even low-skill but high-passion) people with toil, grind, and work ethic backing them. I am not interesting in seeing, hearing, or perceiving slop from tasteless husks that are allergic to hard work. I'd love to see more of the good from this technology, but each and every way I've seen it marketed is "this is a shortcut that's good because we can take away the need for you to do high-skill work".

@MatRopert The first time I was made aware of this feature and tried to learn how to use it I literally COULD NOT believe it. Surely there is a better way to implement such functionality and expose it to the programmer 😭😭

It's been 15 years and C++ variadic pack syntax is still the best way to waste an hour of your time you'd have been better off using to implement things another way. Those damn "..." only make sense for like 3 people I swear.

-- JOB SEARCH POST/RT APPRECIATED -- Hello everyone! I am available for work (full time position/internship) anywhere in the world with priority going to the EU, starting June 2026. My past experience at Quantic Dream and UBISOFT as an intern have strengthened my skills as a graphics programmer in AAA and am now looking for the next step in my career. My skills include C/C++, graphics programming using APIs like Vulkan, Metal, DirectX 12, and console APIs. I am also familiar with modern rendering techniques including GPU driven rendering, raytracing and more. If you're looking for a engine/graphics programmer to join your team, or if you know someone that might be interested, feel free to DM me!

Great post. I sorta wish the learning resources I had when I started learning graphics had this kind of context for why things are the way they are in the current & last gen apis. Then again, I was already overwhelmed with information so maybe it wouldn't have been helpful.

Because you neither paid, nor credited, nor even acknowledged the artists whose work you're now implicitly using. This is pretty simple. If you go out and buy a bunch of art books and you look through those to get ideas, the people who made the art books get the money one-for-one for every studio that ever buys those books. If you go to someone's portfolio page on the internet and get some ideas, you now know who that person is and maybe you really like what they did. Maybe you might hire them to do concept art for your game someday. If you ask a generative AI to generate ideas for you, you pay Google, OpenAI, Midjourney, etc., and that's it. The artists who made everything that goes into it get nothing. They do not get money. They do not get exposure. They do not even get the bare minimum acknowledgement from you that they even existed. I am glad players are angry about generative AI. I hope they get even more angry. Artists that contribute art to a creative process deserve better treatment than this. If you like generative AI as a tool, advocate for a properly licensed, properly attributed version of it first. If instead you choose to use generative AI and ignore the ethical issues, you more than deserve the backlash.
Swen Vincke @where?@LarAtLarian

Holy fuck guys we’re not "pushing hard" for or replacing concept artists with AI. We have a team of 72 artists of which 23 are concept artists and we are hiring more. The art they create is original and I’m very proud of what they do. I was asked explicitly about concept art and our use of Gen AI. I answered that we use it to explore things. I didn’t say we use it to develop concept art. The artists do that. And they are indeed world class artists. We use AI tools to explore references, just like we use google and art books. At the very early ideation stages we use it as a rough outline for composition which we replace with original concept art. There is no comparison. I talked about how we use ML here if you would like to know more: gamespot.com/articles/baldu… We've hired creatives for their talent, not for their ability to do what a machine suggests, but they can experiment with these tools to make their lives easier.

@minamisatokun CMake is absolutely horrible. The only reason there is to learn it is that it's the de-facto standard. So depends on your goal with learning C++ !
