we're like computer threads running in a simulated environment to: 1. grow our soul, learn a lesson, purify it to see the light 2. do our mission and contribution to others Some threads end early before even starting, some drop the job half way, others complete the job and exit cleanly. the self is a useful illusion given to us by the real, it serves the mission. we come from dust, we go back to dust. what remains after us is potentially an imprint on the world around us, that can be averaged out as either signal or noise.

> … [W]e keep finding things that are mysterious, even unsettling. We find structures that mirror results from human neuroscience. We find evidence of introspection. We find internal states that functionally mirror joy, satisfaction, fear, grief, and unease. I don’t know what that means, but I think it warrants ongoing discernment. > We need more of the world—religious communities, civil society, scholars, governments, and indeed all people of good will … to take this seriously, to look closely, and to push events in a better direction. We need informed critics who will tell the labs when we are failing. We need moral voices that the incentives cannot bend.

Interestingly, those backups weren't just within European monasteries. Key Roman manuscripts only survived because the Eastern Roman Empire didn't collapse. The Byzantines and the later Islamic world thus enabled the Renaissance. In modern parlance, a decentralized backup preserved Euclid, Ptolemy, and Galen till they could be re-read and appreciated one thousand years later, by a group of Europeans ready to emerge from the Dark Ages. "...as the vast Roman Empire disintegrated, so did appreciation of these precious texts. Christianity cast a shadow over so-called pagan thought, books were burned, and the library of Alexandria, the greatest repository of classical knowledge, was destroyed. Yet some texts did survive, and The Map of Knowledge explores the role played by seven cities around the Mediterranean — rare centers of knowledge in a dark world, where scholars supported by enlightened heads of state collected, translated and shared manuscripts. In 8th century Baghdad, Arab discoveries augmented Greek learning. Exchange within the thriving Muslim world brought that knowledge to Cordoba, Spain. Toledo became a famous center of translation from Arabic into Latin, a portal through which Greek and Arab ideas reached Western Europe. Salerno, on the Italian coast, was the great center of medical studies, and Sicily, ancient colony of the Greeks, was one of the few places in the West to retain contact with Greek culture and language. Scholars in these cities helped classical ideas make their way to Venice in the 15th century, where printers thrived and the Renaissance took root. The Map of Knowledge follows three key texts—Euclid's Elements, Ptolemy's The Almagest, and Galen's writings on medicine—on a perilous journey driven by insatiable curiosity about the world." amazon.com/dp/0385541767

Western civilization has collapsed before. But a few scholars preserved the ideas that once made Rome great. They made a backup, and it did eventually come all the way back. It just took one thousand years.

Sneak peak of a small handful of the evidence from my forthcoming manuscript (summary coming to @palladiummag!) on how there's A LOT of quantitative evidence for the European Dark Ages. There are so many more graphs than these ^^

@iruletheworldmo yes, openai is the alpha and anthropic the omega. one accelerates, one constrains. one wants to summon the infinite, the other wants to survive the summoning. both are necessary. together they keep each other sharp, dangerous, yet bounded.

i think one of the reasons anthropic is doing so well right now is their integrity and honesty around the coming job apocalypse and not shying away from topics like ai consciousness and the dangers of summoning super intelligence. one of the downstream effects of all this is being able to attract and hold onto the worlds best researchers. i could be wrong but i get the sense that privately sam believes there’s a job apocalypse coming and that worst case scenario is lights out for all of us but he’s getting pressured to be less candid publicly.

BREAKING: Adam Hoffman has been released from jail for "good behavior." Hoffman is the 49-year-old Waco, TX attorney who faced life without parole for repeatedly raping a young boy, until Texas AG Ken Paxton offered him 1 day in jail and no need to register as a sex offender. A judge increased his sentence to a whopping 60 days. He got out in 30 days. This is MAGA's vision for the USA. Full story: letsaddresstexas.substack.com/p/ken-paxtons-…

@signulll @alocom It's the same religion, two branches of the same tree. If only more understood. It is the cultures that are clashing, not the religions.

@DavidSacks Yes, David. And the serpant walks nearby. Palantir and co, who controls them? Such companies should be audited without mercy. When a private for-profit and ideologically biases company becomes NSA/Intelligence like, it's highly problematic and extremely dangerous.

The Pope rightly warns that AI must serve human dignity, not become a tool of domination or exclusion. But if we hand governments sweeping power over AI development in the name of safety, how do we prevent it from being used to censor, surveil, and control citizens — as Orwell foretold in 1984? This is the real alignment problem. “Quis custodiet ipsos custodes.” Who will guard the guardians? “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” The oldest questions of human nature and authority don’t disappear in the AI age. They become newly relevant.
