News: Sophomore guard Bishop Boswell has committed to Maryland, his agent, Nate Conley, tells ESPN. This is a pivotal addition for the Terps heading into next season, as Boswell started 33 games at Tennessee, and shot 38.5 percent from three. The former SC Next top-100 prospect won a state championship in high school and advanced to the Elite Eight in the NCAA Tournament with Tennessee this past season.

South Carolina is poised to be the latest state to make college athletes’ rev sharing contracts exempt from public records requests. Legislators argued athletes are being paid w/ private money (tv contracts) & that it’s a competitive disadvantage if agreements must be disclosed.

@WinterSportsLaw I agree. I think some of the percentages taken are too high for some but an agent shouldn’t be capped at 5% considering there’s is a lot more that goes into this process than what is being portrayed with rev share agreements. (Good) Agents need a seat at the table as well !

A commission of 15-20% is standard in the pros & college for marketing deals an agent obtains for a client. School and collective agreements are the equivalent of player contracts so they’re different.

A new college athletics bill known as the HUSTLE Act was introduced in the Senate today. The NIL savings accounts would provide a good option for college athletes. But the agent fee regulation should be amended to distinguish b/w school/collective deals & other marketing deals.

@WinterSportsLaw Would an attorney lower their hourly rate to look at a collective agreement vs a marketing agreement? Or should attorneys cap their rate on which they are compensated ?

@WinterSportsLaw Not sure it’s right to cap an agent fee at 5% when there’s a lot more that goes into this process than what is on the surface. The value of contracts in college vs. NBA aren’t comparable either. If fees are too low a lot of good / respected agents doing it right will be gone.

The #NIL bill by @RepLoriTrahan gets it right. Athletes would control their NIL without restrictions, keep their deals private, states can provide more rights, and there's a path to collective bargaining. No NCAA antitrust immunity. No surveillance state. This is the standard. Not the SCORE Act.
