Right to Repair -- the campaign to let you fix your stuff -- is off to the races in state capitols once again. Turns out that people do want to fix there stuff, no matter where they live. Here's a quick 🧵 to give you a rundown:

If you believe that we have a truth problem in this country, I think you need to come to terms with how commonly industry does this, and how much it erodes our civic process. It's just so gross.

This text went out and was forwarded to me. The REPAIR Act lets a car's owner control its data to some degree, including the right to ask that data to be deleted. The Auto Alliance is trying to get people to see it as a threat to privacy to protect their financial interests

I've lost a bunch of weight by eating less. No fat shot. Am I using a flip phone in the iPhone era?

The prevailing message about AI is 1) we need to win, and 2) if you don't compete you will lose, and be left out. I don't want to compete. I want to live. I don't like AI stuff, I like human stuff. None of this seems necessary or beneficial.

It's being handled in a way that seems to demand we trust in its controlling executives, who not only do not seem personally trustworthy, most with power in our society seem to be racking up moral and ethical black marks.

As a kid of the 80s/90s, I thought it was so weird how people embraced main stream commercial stuff without much protest. I wonder if the tide on that is starting to turn. Weird and offbeat stuff getting "cool" again. Let's hope! It's more interesting for sure!

| We have the opportunity to ensure the Right to Repair here in Maine! Lawmakers are considering LD 1908, a bill that would require manufacturers to provide the parts, tools, and information needed to repair the electronics we already own. And hone...

@bigblackjacobin I have definitely been called to explain things to a reporter and not been quoted. Sometimes I'm disappointed -- getting quoted is helpful to me! But treating reporters as if you deign to talk to them they owe you a quote is childish. To view it so transactionally is also gross

Also sometimes you are not quoting someone but you need help understanding something! Sometimes the quote is cut in edits, sometimes you realize you were wrong, sometimes the piece evolves, theres a million reasons that could be at play

You cite sources you use. You don’t cite sources you don’t use. Calling someone and realizing the conversation maybe doesn’t contribute to the piece (or doesn’t fit) is OK. As is reading a source and realizing it doesn’t actually contribute to whatever you’re researching.
JMDavis@JessMarinDavis

I can't believe I need to say this, but if, as a journalist, you use my time, research & expertise without quoting me, don't be surprised if I never return your call.

Then they charge huge sums for the parts, which might be just from a standard truck, but you can't be sure. 400% of the price, etc. And, these monopolized suppliers are slow, since they are just pass throughs with no competition. It's terrible and should be stopped

In LA, when the fires hit, some 1/2 of fire trucks were not in operation due to repair issues. So it's not just expensive, it's life threatening. From what I learned, the truck assemblers buy parts from other manufacturers, put on new part IDs / SKU so you can't buy from others

The conditions around Fire trucks are bad, and its something I've looked into as well as it relates to Right to Repair. One of the impacts is that these rolled up truck makers are massively overcharging for spare parts, and use a variety of tactics to keep those prices high.
American Economic Liberties Project@econliberties

Allentown is fighting back against the fire truck manufacturing monopoly! In April, the city filed a suit saying manufacturers like Rev Group "have imposed extraordinary price increases and other worsening of terms on fire departments, taxpayers, cities, and counties."
