I don't think we as humans should operate like this.
Either we agree to things and see it through or we don't.
If the candidates are still going through other offers and interviews, better not to accept an offer beforehand.
Going back after signing on something just 2 days before joining is not good.
It's a free market for sure. But some things are just not good.

This is a free market. People should take the best deal for themselves. Sometimes that is the higher offer. Sometimes it is the better role or better company.
What surprises me is something else.
In a market where most companies I know have cut dev hiring plans to nearly 1/3rd, someone still has multiple companies chasing them.
That dev is a unicorn 🦄
Good on them for squeezing every bit of the CTC.

Interviewed a backend developer. Guy was at 21 LPA. We offered 28 LPA, roughly a 33 percent hike. He agreed and confirmed joining. Yesterday he emailed saying he got a 32 LPA offer elsewhere and now wants 36 LPA from us. Nonsense. Why agree in the first place. If you are still shopping offers just say it upfront. We stopped interviewing other candidates and waited through the notice period for the joining date. Now two days before joining, he came back with a new price tag.
