The rare and intriguing Yarrow Stone in the Scottish Borders. Its inscription, displayed sideways, is early Christian and in Latin; and commemorates two princes named Nudoss and Dumnogenus, who lived and died in the 400s or 500s. More pics and info: undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/selkirk/yarrow…

@n_docs @EngFocus Because it is not about "renationalisation", it's about recreating a vertically integrated railway - as per the Williams Rsview. It's structure not ownership that matters. And @SteveWhiteRail is already showing how vertical integration makes a difference.

@n_docs @JHCPAL Any mention of Hays in Hedley book? Im particularly interested in William Hay of Alnmouth, later of Lesbury. He lived in Lesbury House and leased Lesbury Mill from Duke of Nrthumb. He lived from 1732-1816. Thank you.

@EngFocus @Captain_Deltic The problem is re-nationalisation has never been sold to the public. No one has stood up and said what it will mean or how it will work. Any explanation has run out of steam at the ‘it stands to reason it will be better’ stage, & far too many people have failed to question that

@n_docs Have decided I'm going to research each person before posting the memorials. I'll find something interesting - there is always something. I only went to Bath as I was gifted an " experience" at an independent book shop! Have returned with a bag of books and many 🐇🕳️!

My mam’s had a look at census returns to try and find out what happened to young Mark here. Born in 1850 he’s on the census in 1851 and 1861, but seems to disappear after that. Wonder if he died young - or even emigrated?

This photo has always haunted me. Mark Bell, 12 years old, and a ‘tally boy’ at Hartley Colliery. He was asked to identify the decomposed bodies of 204 men and boys as they were brought to the surface.

@DrFrancisYoung I’m not wading in. I’ve learned my lesson. I tried discussing the Danelaw yesterday at the Viking part of the British Museum with my 9 year old. He only looked at me and said, “I’m really sorry, but I wasn’t listening. I didn’t realize you were talking to me.”

The last match up this big between England and Norway was at Stamford Bridge... in 1066... We won that one, but lost to France in the final. 960 years of hurt..

@northerncurio @JHCPAL The earliest I know of are some of the landholdings of Hexham Priory, printed in the Black Book of Hexham. They are even later copies of boundaries documented well after the conquest, and some that I’ve tried to work out would appear to be corrupted in the copying.

@n_docs @JHCPAL If only we had something like that for the NE. I don't think the Boldon Book even describes boundaries?

Pegwhistle Burn forms part of the current ecclesiastical parish boundary of Bedlington St Cuthbert, many parish boundaries being very ancient. @JHCPAL's etymological insights have me thinking who Peg/Pecg was and what the bounds of their estate were, the burn possibly being one?

Pegwhistle Burn, the historic western boundary of Bedlingtonshire, an ancient shire of the small Anglo-Saxon kind. It's northern & southern boundaries were the rivers Wansbeck and Blyth respectively. I wonder if Pegwhistle is related to Pegswood approx 5miles north?

@northerncurio @JHCPAL Unfortunately I don’t think we have any, but the surviving contemporary bounds of Anglo Saxon parishes/estates in Berkshire for example are wonderful documents to compare with the existing landscapes. This is an example from Chieveley, some of which I was once very familiar with.
