To think, many people, including those within Government thought that rail would never recover! People are still working from home, or 2/3 days a week at the office. Imagine if they started to come back en masse. Many employers are trying to get people back to the office.

U.K. mainline rail use excluding Elizabeth line was 105% of the equivalent period in 2019 (4 weeks ending 3rd May) making overall usage c120% of pre covid…gov.uk/government/sta…

@EngFocus Not sure how everything would play out once you include price tbh. There is efficiency gains for diesel in general though. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/… - Article on the US and Saudi bombing the emission talks. Don't know how things are changing with recent events tho

Just thinking out loud here, so go easy. But if we drastically reduced our dependence on diesel for land based transport and transitioned ships from burning heavy fuel oil to diesel would that have a noticeable impact on CO2 emissions?
Noel Dolphin@NoelDolphin

OK - stay with me. This ship shows the difficulty with UK Gov's policy of hoping batteries will sort rail freight. This ship has 10 containers of batteries (19MWh), but only a range of 90ish miles (1/2).

I'm finally getting in the habit of actually sending the images I capture to magazines. My latest image features in @RAIL issue 1061 within which @philatrail details some of the latest plans for East West Rail

@OblivMC If existing ships could run on diesel would there be no noticeable efficiency gains? US pulling out of the emissions initiative is seriously going to set things back considerably

@EngFocus Switching to Diesel would mostly just drop SOx and NOx emissions, CO2 reductions would be minimal if I remember correctly. Most attempts at pushing for transition has been hindered by the big fossil fuel players though, recent plans for shipping emissions were stopped by the US

@EngFocus @Oberon48 @RAIL Not if GBR takes "arm's length" literally. That's why the Gibb sacking is so important. Did DFTO push back as it has nothing to do with HS2 rolling stock policy? What we know is that HMT and DfT won't want to let go. GBR Chair and CEO must be ready to stamp on their fingers.
