I’ve just learned of the killing by Israel of one of the most courageous people I knew: rescuer Hussein Jaber from the Lebanese Civil Defence in Nabatieh. I had known him for three years and met him many times. He was always inspiring, brave and endlessly helpful for many reporters. We will not forget what Israel has done to Lebanon’s rescuers. Today is World Keffiyeh Day. A keffiyeh is a traditional Arab headdress also commonly worn as a scarf, typically made with cotton and woven with a distinctive pattern symbolizing different aspects of Palestinian life - the historical trade routes, ties to the sea and fishing, and ties to the land and the olive trees. Its existence long predates the establishment of the settler colonial state of Israel in 1948 on the land known as Palestine. Learning about Palestine and the culture and heritage of Palestinians while visiting historic Palestine, occupied Palestine including Jerusalem and the West Bank, and the Gaza Strip, has been the privilege of my lifetime. As someone who grew up with a passport that has allowed me to visit a place like Palestine, when my own Palestinian friends and comrades who were born as refugees outside of Palestine have not had their right to return to their traditional indigenous lands realized - I hold onto the discomfort of confronting my privilege and commit to using said privilege to advance human rights for all. The keffiyeh is a widely recognized symbol of solidarity with Palestinians and Palestine, and their rightful struggle for liberation from oppression and illegal occupation. Both as an important cultural garment and political symbol, the keffiyeh reminds us all that resistance against colonial erasure takes many forms, including as a sign of visible solidarity with Palestinians as they continue to face genocide and apartheid by the Israeli military, widely recognized by the international community. The keffiyeh has been demonized and even banned in certain spaces to represent things that are untrue by its critics, bullies, and racists. Like many other forms of visible solidarity with Palestine, such as the watermelon, the keffiyeh has been wrongly censored and excluded because of anti-Palestinian racism. The watermelon became a symbol for Palestine because it shares the same colours as the Palestinian flag, and was used when the settler colonial state of Israel banned the Palestinian flag in occupied Palestine in 1967. The Israeli government continues to pass laws that apply only to Palestinians under a system of apartheid, including a death penalty law for prisoners that only applies to Palestinian political prisoners or hostages. When injustice becomes law, resistance and solidarity become responsibilities for all of us to embrace. So wear the keffiyeh. So wear the watermelon pin. But these small visible signs of solidarity are also not enough. Speaking up is also not enough. Being on the right side of history is not enough. We need to build the people power necessary to affect and create material change for the people we love and care about, and are in community and solidarity with. Organize with others, mobilize, and act. Together we can show the oppressors that the power lies in the people, and the people demand a Free Palestine. 🇵🇸
