Ep 7 did well at the box office, so I guess they thought that reflected the film itself, instead of just hype for the new star wars. So after ep 8 didn't do as well they went back to something "safe".

JJ Abrams who hated the prequels made eps 7 and 9 and copied a lot from the OT; new death star, new empire, new vader, Palestine returned. It was safe, shallow, and didn't do much with the few new ideas
