A critically endangered Freshwater Pearl Mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera) using its 'muscular foot' to try to reach a more suitable habitat in a eutrophic river in Donegal this week. However, there is nowhere better to go for this elderly mussel. There were once millions of mussels here, but they haven't reproduced in decades. They will all be gone soon, and the salmon will follow them. It's all about water quality!

This is reckless + could cause desertion. Please give details of the NPWS guidelines you claim to follow.

@TheBarnOwlProj1 @BirdWatchIE Not bullying anyone. No agenda. Just concerned for the owls, as disturbance during the breeding season could cause them to fail. If the team has the knowledge and expertise in best practice of dealing with the Barn owls, backed by scientific research, then there’s no issue.

A site in the upper River Boyne catchment today. We see scenes like this every day we are out surveying. Intensive agriculture is the key reason why rivers like the Boyne have unsatisfactory water quality. This is happening at hundreds of sites in the Boyne catchment alone.
