@xtinexoop @RailsDevLevi @singer_joseph @EveHayes123 Of course the parent will keep an eye, just like they do at any event. Children at conferences isn't something new. Many conferences have children present. Which is why I'm confused at the negativity.

I’m at a conference today. The organisers just told me that I can’t bring my daughter to the networking session or the dinner tonight. I couldn’t get a babysitter. This is one of those times, as a single parent, that you really miss out. It felt like a gut punch.

@xtinexoop @RailsDevLevi @singer_joseph @EveHayes123 Hence why I specifically said "behaving" because it appears that people are only imagining a difficult child. The child in the photo looks to be school age, so probably able to keep distracted for sometime while Mum networks for a bit.

As I'm imagining people think negatively about this purely on the assumption that the child would be difficult. What if that's not the case? What if the parent came prepared with items to distract the child for an hour or so? That's my Q.

@natasha_aley @singer_joseph @xtinexoop @EveHayes123 Behaving is a big assumption, a young child at an event like that could easily end up having a tantrum, getting overstimulated and crying or being disruptive, etc.

@singer_joseph @xtinexoop @EveHayes123 Then you don't go. Not having a baby sitter isn't an excuse to bring your kid to work or anything else they shouldn't be, why would it be for a work or buisness oriented convention?

I spoke to a newly pregnant grad student today who told me her union had negotiated 15 days off. Im not her primary advisor and not full time faculty right now but I can’t believe this is still a thing. I’ve told this story before, but strap in….

@betty_blue683 It was first a struggle to realise that I couldn't ever fully concentrate on my project again and didn't have as much time flexibility. Also learning to be as efficient as possible with a lot less sleep. It's a huge adjustment, but not impossible.

My 9 yo nephew asked me what non-binary was. I told him, “some people are completely boys, some people are completely girls, & some people are neither feel fully a boy or fully a girl, they are in-between. They often use “they/them” pronouns.” He said “ok.” And that was it. /1
