@TuttReal There is something calamitous in making Freud an Enlightenment figure somehow. Collapsing the originality of psychoanlalysis into a kind of puerile "taking control of oneself," and not something constitutive in language and being.

There's this old way of thinking about how Freud is the inheritor of Nietzsche that Philip Rieff develops which I sort of like. It goes like this: Nietzsche is a philosopher that helps us come to terms with the reality that there is no higher purpose in the modern cosmos. Freud builds on this teaching through psychoanalysis in that the design of the 'talking cure' is that to undergo analysis will mean that you, as a subject, can now face the fundamental meaninglessness of modern life with more courage. Hence, both Nietzsche and Freud are some type of virtue theorists.
