@LeDindonFiscal On a vraiment une culture du travail malsaine en France. Je suis parti à Londres il y a 10 ans. Paris me manque tous les jours, mais professionnellement, aucun regret.

C’est quoi votre pire expérience dans le monde du travail ? Moi, c’était lors d’un stage. J’avais déniché une agence web et, après l’entretien, j’étais aux anges : l’équipe avait l’air sympa, il y avait une PS4 dans la salle de repos, et on me faisait miroiter des soirées pizza. Aujourd'hui, je sais reconnaître les "red flags", mais à l'époque, j'étais aveugle. Entre l’entretien et mon premier jour, deux mois s'écoulent. Problème : la moitié de l’équipe a démissionné entre-temps. Je débarque sur un champ de bataille. Le patron ? Disparu à l’étranger. Il ne reste qu’une cheffe de projet de 28 ans, fraîchement sortie d’école de commerce, qui semble porter toute la misère du monde sur ses épaules alors qu'elle ne fout rien. Elle me lance, sans même me regarder : « Reprends le projet de Quentin qui est parti la semaine dernière, je suis sous l'eau … » Je suis là depuis dix minutes et j'ai déjà une boule au ventre. Je ne le sens pas. Personne ne m’a dit bonjour, le silence est de plomb. On me colle devant un PC sans même me donner d'identifiants. Je demande de l’aide à mon voisin d’en face ; il soupire, se lève pesamment, me donne les codes, me montre vaguement où se situe le projet et se rassoit sans un mot. Le projet en question ? Rien à voir avec mes missions. Je devais bosser sur des applications mobiles, je me retrouve à développer un back-office pour des entrepôts. Je comprends vite que mon prédécesseur a fait un abandon de poste tellement le projet est en retard. L’ambiance est toxique. Il faut arriver à 8h00 pile, et non 9h00, sous peine de remarques cinglantes. Personne ne décroche un mot. Pour aller aux toilettes, je dois passer devant le bureau de la cheffe de projet qui, à chaque putain de fois, lève les yeux au ciel en soupirant. La pause déjeuner de deux heures ? Expédiée en trente minutes. Tu avales ton sandwich triangle Sodebo ou ta PastaBox et tu retournes t’asseoir en silence. Le soir, la fin de journée est théoriquement à 18h00, mais personne ne bouge. 18h05, 18h15, 19h00... On attend que quelqu’un craque enfin pour donner le signal du départ. C’est dingue ce que j’ai pu accepter pour tenter de m’intégrer. J’ai même développé une allergie. La raison ? La poussière. Faire le ménage coûte trop cher, apparemment. Il y avait des moutons de poussière partout ; je passais mes journées à éternuer entre deux lignes de code. Au bout de trois semaines, un autre salarié craque et s'en va. Pour boucler son projet à temps, la cheffe de projet nous enferme littéralement dans les locaux jusqu’à 23h00. Là, je craque. J’appelle mon école, mais c’est la douche froide : « Si tu quittes ton stage, tu ne valides pas ton année. Serre les dents et tais-toi. » Aucun soutien. J’ai honte, je me persuade que le problème vient de moi, que je suis juste trop nul pour tenir le rythme. Heureusement, ma mère est avocate. Quand je finis par tout lui raconter, elle voit rouge. Elle m’explique que rien de tout cela n’est normal. Elle appelle l’école et, d'un coup, le ton change radicalement : je dois faire signer une rupture de stage immédiatement. Le lundi, j’arrive et je pose le papier sur le bureau. Le ton monte vite. On me traite de « petite merde qui lâche les gens ». Je ne réponds rien, je veux juste ma signature. Une fois le papier en main, je me barre. En remontant dans ma voiture, j'ai senti une chaleur envahir tout mon corps. Je redevenais enfin humain. Cette expérience m’a marqué, surtout sur ma confiance en moi. En discutant avec d’autres, j’ai compris que ce n’était pas un cas isolé et que la souffrance au travail est un fléau trop sous-estimé.

The sabotage vector relied on deployment of the driver across a network via worm, corrupting calculations on every machine, and eliminating the possibility of cross-checking results against a clean system. I know a number of British people who lived 1 to 2 years in Italy and then came back. The constant is that they have young children. Whatever they tell you, if you ask them about the Italian school system, they will eventually admit that it was, if not the main one, one of the critical items for them. Italian primary school is much harder than the British one. An awful lot of Italian parents cope with that by literally abandoning their children to their own devices. Most take a more proactive stance, so they either start tutoring their children themselves (a couple of hours a day per child starting in year 1) or pay for tutors to do it in their stead. In primary school, British kids have homework once per week. Italian kids have homework once per day, doubled over the weekend. If you visit Italian homes in the afternoon and they have children, it is pretty standard to see the kids sitting at the main table with books and notebooks spread all around, with a parent or a tutor sitting with them for the whole session. Also, the amount of books they have to carry to school every day is borderline unbelievable. You would think they are training them to carry legionary backpacks. For people accustomed to the gentle British primary schooling, the Italian system feels borderline insane. Note also that it has massively eased up: in my childhood, we had to memorise a long poem every weekend (which back then meant Sunday, as Saturday was school day). h/t @GroovySciFi

I know UBI supporters think we'll all find our best lives by being given free time and reducing the difficulty of life to zero. Maybe. I think if you combine our current bureaucratic civilisation with UBI you won't get Star Trek...

It took me a moment to digest why all this pro UBI advocacy even from @elonmusk felt wrong to me... I think this is because it represents the absolute denial of the protestant work ethic and it's role in humanity's current progress out of the mud.

@technopopulist It's interesting how coordinated the left is. You're starting to hear the same isolationist left views on French twitter (De Lagasnerie) and I think Piker has similar views in the US.

This is completely on-brand for Polanski, and it gives you a clear glimpse into his mindset. He’s the classic teenage utopian fantasist, obsessed with total emancipation and the creation of a frictionless, ideologically uniform society with no borders and no resistance. But to get there, he has to seize the state, manage the “birth pangs” of this new order, and take direct action against internal enemies. Polanski is a dangerous man.

Quand j’étais jeune, une municipalité socialiste avait été élue dans le canton suisse de Bâle-Ville. Sa première décision avait été d’augmenter massivement les impôts « sur les riches ». Lesdits « riches », quelques familles, déménagèrent promptement dans le canton voisin de Bâle-Campagne, de l’autre côté du pont. On se rendit compte alors que ces riches payaient déjà plus de 40 % des impôts. Il fallut donc augmenter brutalement les impôts des « pauvres »… C’est toute l’histoire de l’ISF en France, ce qui n’empêche pas cet impôt stupide de perdurer sous une forme ou une autre. Il faudra bien qu’un jour on se pose une question essentielle : les impôts servent-ils à payer le fonctionnement de l’État, et dans ce cas le but est de trouver le niveau optimal qui gêne le moins la croissance, ou bien sont-ils un système servant à promouvoir on ne sait quelle justice fiscale telle qu’elle est définie par une élite omnisciente et s’apparentant très fortement à la lutte des classes ? Dans le deuxième cas, la plupart du temps, la croissance disparaît et avec elle la seule justice fiscale qui marche : le plein-emploi.
