"There is greater acceptance now that there is a detectable acceleration of warming". Great article by John Muyskens and Shannon Osaka in today's Washington Post: washingtonpost.com/climate-enviro…

With cold outbreaks sweeping parts of the US, some have argued that climate change is to blame. But the proposed mechanism remains quite controversial in the scientific community, and the number of extreme cold events have been decreasing almost everywhere.

Recent assessments have found the last glacial maximum implies a climate sensitivity of 2.4C (1.4C to 5.0C): science.org/doi/10.1126/sc… And the Pliocene implies a sensitivity of 3.1C (2.3C to 4.7C): pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… Paleoclimate evidence generally provides the strongest constraint on high ECS.

If, instead of her own dog, Kristi Noem had shot John Wick's dog, she'd already be gone and forgotten.

@nedgar If these bits of UI state are important to the user then arguably this should be part of the either the view state or persisted state.

There’s a distinction between view state and UI state. 🧵 View state is what the user recognizes as a room that they enter in your app. It’s something that they might share with others, bookmark, seek in their nav history. The user needs control over this.

@seeteegee This is where so many SPAs fall down — they may remember the view state by updating the URL but don’t remember the UI state, so things like scroll position, selection, and focus get lost e.g. on back-navigation.

There’s a precedent for fairly straightforward UI state triggering that’s tweakable and readable in an imperative language. It’s the command-line, a place where you can * switch things on/off * provide paths to items * go to another app * use multiple lines * get online help

@seeteegee Oh man, and I thought the dog strangling vine was out of control. Wild parsnip is nasty stuff.

My house is basically surrounded by “wild parsnip”, a plant capable of causing 2nd degree burns to the skin if you get the sap on you and go out into the sun. This wet and sunny weather has made some of these the size of small trees.

I know that Ottawa has had some really incredible weather this year so far. Plenty of rain, but also sunny stretches, not super hot or cold, not tropical storms. The crops are probably doing great. The lawn, tree, and weed management is very hard this year.

Who remembers this moment in Prince of Persia (1989) where a magic mirror suddenly blocks the hero's path (and what happens afterward)? This moment was actually never planned to be in the game. My original vision was a game with lots of traps, but NO enemies... (1/10)

I wonder how long until some of the wasm/wasi stuff gets incorporated into the OS level.

@JBezivin I seem to recall someone speaking on stage, at one of the OO conferences of old, about their experience with breakfast pancakes and real maple syrup: “15:00 l’après midi — toujours pas faim!” 😂

@GinnyGhezzo 🧐 Isn’t a letter / numeric grade (not just pass/fail) a kind of “graduated” signal, though, providing input for next assignment? Hopefully more feedback given than just the grade too. But I agree more could and should be done to make learning more exploratory, w. lower stress.

@Segway Do you have any updates on your Cube Series power stations? I'm surprised not to see any content about them in your timeline, from either the crowdfunding campaign or e.g. unboxing / test videos now that units have (apparently) started shipping out over the last month.

Reindeer on the move tonight — a magical scene from ice age France. Illuminated by oil fat lamps, the panel of swimming reindeer at Lascaux was drawn in black manganese crayon some 17,000 winters past 🦌🦌 Happy Christmas everyone! 🎄

What are the odds it’s just gonna translate into an ancient equivalent of Never Gonna Give You Up? In the timeless expanse, I vow unfaltering fidelity, Shall not falter, nor abandon with duplicity. Through the vastness, I shan't wander nor forsake, Grief I shall not inflict, nor partake in heartache. Farewell shall not escape my lips, nor mendacious deceit, In this ancient bond, sincerity shall steadfastly beat.
