Ever wonder what an early 18th century cheesecake would taste like? You’re in luck: Elizabeth’s Maynard’s receipt book has one recipe. Though, as I learned, “cheesecake” is a tad misleading. 🧵🧵🧵

Loving this from @Quaritch! Eighteenth-century MS history of a Gravesend-based erotic society. Its coat of arms was 'Three conies couchant, three Cocks rampant, crested and proper’!

My colleague at @theUL built a cradle designed for digitizing Chinese rare books with restricted openings, especially those rebounded in western binding styles. How talented and creative my colleagues are! Thanks to @mmpawlikowski for showing me on how to use this cradle.

Writing a formula for this miscellany today. It might be the first example I've seen of erotica being referred to as some version 'curiosa', and is also the only book I know of that claims to have been published by a ghost.

Any member of @blackwelloxford staff who has stayed still for too long in the Rare dept has been asked "DO YOU WANT TO SEE THE OWLS?"
Blackwell's Rare Books@blackwellrare

Our @BostonBookFair highlights catalogue is now live, and with it we can reveal our current obsession: OWLS, in an incredible, seemingly unpublished album of original studies of nocturnal birds by the preeminent German naturalist Ludwig Reichenbach blackwells.co.uk/rarebooks/cata…

As a Jewish person I think the words we use to describe the situation unfolding in Gaza is important I personally use words like genocide & concentration camp because it’s both factually accurate & Jewish people don’t have a monopoly on the words we use to describe atrocities

@book_historia This, and I think people are used to spaces that look old in real life being somehow constructed/reproductions, from historic house museums that use replicas for preservation purposes to theme parks!

Questions like this are a great opportunity to meet a visitor where they are, and to discuss how “old” books are still used for research today! [3/3]

I think this is less an issue of the physical vs. digital, and more that the main venue through which the majority of the public first encounters “old” books is in movies/video games/tv. It is understood that the books in those settings are props, and not “real” [1/?]
Marsh's Library@MarshsLibrary

"Are the books real?" This question is coming up more & more often on tours of Marsh's Library. Actual physical, in-person tours when people are 2 feet away from the books. It's as if some people are so used to living online that they can't quite understand physical reality.

@FunkeBooks Ah, I was unclear—I meant any standout titles that I could locate other copies of and get on loan. The entire lineage of all German nobility is certainly… a project I’d expect to take a few thousand pages, that’s for sure!

@nestinthestacks I don’t think they let booksellers anywhere near ILL ;-) I hope to get to the collection in 2024 and start by making a spreadsheet list. The prior owner also created a manuscript of a few thousand pp. where I think he tried to trace the complete lineage of all German nobility.

Ben walked downstairs to me sitting in the dark, balancing my phone flashlight and a magnifying glass, and sketching out my best attempt at this (very shallowly stamped) crest. Any leads, especially reference sources for German heraldry, are greatly appreciated!
Ben Gross@bhgross144

Is there a herald in the house? My colleague @nestinthestacks is looking for help identifying the coat of arms on the cover of this 1780 #newacq in @LindaHall_org's collection. #heraldry #rarebooks #speccolls #histSTM

@FunkeBooks When you get to them (in 1 to 20 years), I’ll be curious to hear! Or, pending actual access to the books, might you have any titles that I can request via ILL?

@nestinthestacks Last year I bought what may be the largest private library in the US on German heraldry- it’s 20 banker boxes. Of course it’s all in storage so it won’t do anyone any good. But I bet the answer is in there!
