That's great post, but Magnifica Humanitas refers to that spefic document of Holly Office from 1886, and it would be hard to describe this refference as affirmative.

This is a misleading characterization. The Catholic Church has never condemned slavery absolutely (nor can she), and she has always understood it as a consequence of the fall of man and a legitimate punishment. Scripture, in both the Old and New Testaments, Popes, Saints and theologians all witness to this. The Holy Office ruled in 1886 that slavery, considered absolutely, was neither opposed to Divine nor Natural law. The same ruling affirms that — provided the slaves were deprived of their liberty by a just title, laid out by theologians and canonists — Catholics may lawfully buy and sell slaves, provided no injury is done to the rights of the latter. Catholic saints have held slaves. Popes and religious orders have done the same. As for the teaching of Pope Leo XIII in “In Plurimis,” he is merely following St. Thomas and identifying slavery as contrary to the first intention of Nature. After the fall of man, however, slavery is to be seen a legitimate punishment. He notes (para. 3) that slavery is “wholly opposed” to the first intention of Nature, but in paragraph 7 of the same encyclical letter, he quotes Sts. Peter and Paul who affirm the legitimacy of slavery in the second intention of Nature, and urge slaves to be subject to good and cruel masters, alike.

@hf_222222 Pardon me, but why is Pope Leo asking for pardon for lack 'unequivocal condemnation' of slavery in the past, if he was just echoing Newman? Should Church ask for pardon for not overthrowing roman despotism e.g? Or allowing polygamy in times of Old Convenant?

@hf_222222 So, in yours interpretation, "universal and absolute" condemnation of slavery as "fully incompatible" with "human dignity" and full understanding of "perennial truths of Revelation" doesn't mean that it is inherently evil -- am I getting this right?

Development of doctrine, on things like slavery, still doesn't mean anything was "intrinsically evil".
Leo instead echoes St John Henry Newman - And his reference to "the slow working of Christian principles".

Opposing gay marriage was/is one of the biggest conservative Ls ever. Legalising it has: - raised the prestige of monogamous long-term marriages among gay men - made being gay less of a clandestine secret culture - integrated gay men as productive members of society with many positive effects So everything conservatives *should* want came from its legalisation, despite it having been something they opposed.

If Wagner titled his video "Moral theology and intimacy between unmarried couples" and been this blunt on the issue this would be looked as a non-issue for those actually interested in engaging. The rest would they would still complain about rigorism.
