I once interviewed an American lawyer who had helped prosecute Nazis at Nuremberg, and he had watched them hang, and when I asked him to describe the experience, he said, “Harrowing,” not because he had any misgivings about Nazis being punished for their crimes, but because we were talking about life and death, and it felt monumental. This is how normal people think. They don’t celebrate death — even the death of someone who didn’t vote the way they would have preferred he voted. They’re certainly not “overjoyed” by it. They may come to the conclusion that it’s necessary and just, as in the case of the American lawyer at Nuremberg, but they are also cognizant of the gravity, the finality, of death. They are not Bolsheviks or savages about it.
Ana Kasparian@AnaKasparian

@Schwarzwald77 Are you offended? Let me clarify: I’m elated that he’s dead. Overjoyed…. Just like he was elated at seeing countless dead children throughout Middle East.

@CUDAHandbook the fun bit is (like Vulkan later on) resisting the urge of having runtime compilation on the driver side and having it on the runtime side and they had to re-learn the lesson later on with CUDA LTO where they did make NVVM a practically public API for a bit but then relented

I've been busy updating the CUDA Handbook text on the website. Lots of platform capabilities that had been updated (e.g. GPUs have demand paging), but also some predictions of features that have been implemented since it was written. Here's one of my favorites, predicting NVRTC.

@Ed_of_O @ernietedeschi which means that with the INSEE numbers 40k means for a couple with 3 kids below 14: 1 + 0.5 + 0.3 * 3 = 2.4 that's 96k. divide it by 5 and you have 19.2k per person

@Ed_of_O @ernietedeschi and besides that what revenu disponible par unité de consommation means is: revenu disponible: - work and financial income (incl rents) + welfare minus - all direct taxes (big note there is excluding VAT) unité de consommation: - 1 UC for the first adult - 0.5 above 14yo, 0.3

Paris’ PPP-adjusted GDP per capita was €126,900 in 2023 which is remarkably high, so you don’t even need to get into (true) discussions about how Haussmann blocks and cobblestone streets don’t count towards GDP… Paris is a high GDP city so of course many people would prefer it!
Luke Metro@luke_metro

I'm not a GDP truther but I still feel like a high percentage of people would prefer a middle-class Parisian lifestyle to living in a Dallas suburb?

@Ed_of_O @ernietedeschi Taking Paris alone without the petite couronne in mind really doesn't make a lot of sense tbh. The city limits are small but a lot of the wealth is in the Paris *region* not the city of Paris itself

"Because of climate change" is so dishonest here tbh. And "not a choice they can afford to make" is just as bad too.

@Ed_of_O @ernietedeschi Paris is a bit odd because it has lots of social housing inside the city... Quite a lot of people with high income do commute from outside the city borders but work in Paris - if only to have more space, so the Paris resident income numbers are a bit misleading.

@ernietedeschi Isn't their gross median personal income ≤€40,000? Then low disposable income... How did they get their cost of services down so low for that conversion factor? 1/3rd cheaper?
