Twitter is a big bundle of the world's weirdest, most neurotic people. But scientists and journalists like it. And I am addicted to learning. So here I am.

In 1860, just under half (46%) of NYC's population was actually born in the state of New York. A small majority (53%) were born in the US. 1 in 4 residents were born in Ireland, with another 22% coming from other foreign countries.

if ur new to health insurance one important piece of advice is to not get the one that no one takes. u might be surprised that this even exists but it does & all the doctors offices will be like “ugh sry we don’t take that one :( that’s the one no one takes”

@dtaspire @jbienkahn She already self-published it. She pulled it because she got a nice deal to professionally publish it. The few poor buyers of her old edition (nearly a year ago) mostly said it was crap reddit.com/r/horrorlit/s/… She also stole the cover art for her old edition. Her career is done.

@jbienkahn I don’t think it’s humiliating at all. She made a story good enough to be picked up, now she has to pursue a different form of distribution because ai is controversial. If editors were discerning with quality instead of obsessed with abstractions, people would read more.

This is extremely big and public and humiliating for this writer, but just know: I’m also privately cancelling each and every writer who pitches me with AI (and I’m sure many other editors are too)…

@jbienkahn It does have a certain soulless, robotic, tedious quality with lots of passive constructions. Or is overly embellished. Tends to go on too long.

@Sprocket0479 @prksh2411 @ApriiSR @oxcrowx If her colleagues called it Tai's formula, then it isn't a claim, it's stating the truth. It's likely true that they'd associate her (independently derived) application in their daily work with her name and not a forgotten chapter of a textbook from 15 years ago.

@prksh2411 @ApriiSR @oxcrowx I agree my initial interpretation was wrong. I still sense some belief of originality. She claims colleagues called it "Tai's formula" and she justifies the change to "Tai's model," but I sense she's missing this is not "Tai's" anything. It's a fine tutorial on a known concept.

@moose_bunny @_megaanmac @vrbo It's VRBO. When booking for 16 family members, there aren't good hotel options if you want to stay together. You can book 8+ individual rooms separate from each other, but that's not what many families want.

@_megaanmac @vrbo I dont get the Airbnb fascination...just stay at a hotel. Just like sometimes it makes alot more sense to just take a taxi with fixed rate than wait in a madhouse scrug of people waiting on Uber & Lyft.

Lol a @vrbo host cancelled my mom’s rental the day she was supposed to check in on my WEDDING weekend, and now can’t find her a new place to stay. Another reminder to just book hotels people

@TheLincoln @mollywidstrom Definitely the laziest ones. A smarter one would create a RAG trained on a specific author (like Stephen King) or a mix of authors and the output would read much more human. Biggest issue is context. LLMs are very bad at remembering how a story flows and fits together.

@mollywidstrom Agree although the ones who get caught will likely be the ones who are very lazy. It wouldn't take that much work to "humanize" an LLM text in a way that would probably protect you and even legally count as your work. This author apparently did not.

@TheLincoln It seems she was originally caught stealing cover art. Publisher must've forgiven her. But people have been very suspicious about LLM writing for months. Even made a 3hr YouTube video analyzing the whole book. reddit.com/r/horrorlit/s/…

@Ed_of_O @allie__voss Just wondering why "bad therapy" exists. It can't just be "some people just suck at their jobs".

@RMFlash11 @allie__voss Have you never met a person in any other profession who was bad at their job? In any jobs you've worked, perhaps? Or do you expect some professions to include only the flawless humans?

China has managed to control rising costs for building nuclear plants, unlike most countries. How? "Indigenization—i.e., building a domestic supply chain and skilled workforce—has been key to China’s ability to avoid cost escalation." Great blog post by @shangwei_ : rooseveltinstitute.org/blog/can-china…

@RMFlash11 @allie__voss You mean do they spend many years studying their field and then many years in supervised under an advisor not learning about these issues? Things like countertransference, ethics, cultural sensitivity, triangulation, rupture, regression, iatrogenic harm, etc. are all taught.

@allie__voss Do those therapists realize that though? Or are they actively sabotaging their clients so they continue to be patients thus a constant flow of money to their practice?

Some signs your therapist isn’t very good: -they have no end plan. The point of therapy is to work through a problem and stop therapy. -they tell you what you should do / give advice. Therapy is about listening and helping the person through an issue, not give them advice. -you find that you’re becoming more dependent on them rather than less.

IMHO, the most valuable innovation from EA is that you want to operate a charity like a business, where some quantitative measurable success metric substitutes for profit. If you don't do that things rapidly get fluffy and dumb, and you waste all the money.
Andy Masley@AndyMasley

EA ideas suffer from a particular problem where many people who've been significantly influenced by them still feel like endorsing any part of the worldview means endorsing all the people and orgs who are currently operating under the EA umbrella. But the ideas are general enough that this seems like saying you can't identify with capitalism without vouching for every self-described capitalist. I think this is an underrated reason more people aren't vocal about the EA ideas they've found valuable. And I'd like to see that change. I don't really care whether someone calls themselves "an EA" or want them to endorse any one thing that's happening or make the brand high status. It's because it's a real deep loss when people can't even point their audience toward the ideas that shaped how they think about the world. The ideas deserve guideposts pointing new people toward them. There are plenty of influential people who I know have been shaped by the basic EA framework who could serve their audiences well by just saying what they liked and what they didn't, but that influence stays mostly invisible unless you already know to look for it. I think it's on people into EA to show that in promoting specific ideas we're not just trying to make the brand or people high status, but it's also on people who have been influenced a lot by these ideas to take a bit of a leap for the sake of the ideas themselves.
