Aligning our calendar with the other top leagues in the world 🗓️ In the summer of 2027, MLS will adopt a summer-to-spring season format, marking one of the most significant developments in the league’s history.

@ZachaeryHatcher @NinoOne They are definitely not the same thing. I’m a huge fan of hats. Weather doesn’t matter, the point is it’s a relatively small adjustment for aligning leagues and actually creating a balanced schedule at last to give MLS a bit more legitimacy. Love hats.

The season currently starts in February (or earlier w/ CCC) and Ends in December (w/ the Playoffs and MLS Cup). I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed but...
CJ South@CJSouth_21

@tombogert So the best idea is to make everyone freezing cold for the majority of the season and also have weather play a bigger factor now? It also overlaps with quite a bit more btw. Start of the season aligns with NFL,CFB,NHL,NBA,CBB. Playoffs to align with other league’s playoffs. Dumb!

@ZachaeryHatcher @NinoOne You don’t have to go to all of the games. Just the ones your team is playing in. And it’s all teams dream to be in playoffs, ergo if they’d made the playoffs then fans would go. This change of schedule is too weather focused. Buy a hat and sing your merry heart out.

@NinoOne There's a difference between conference finals and MLS cup final (so 3 games, max) in December and full slated 2 weeks of regular season games.

@4TheCrewPodcast People focusing a lot on weather… valid but consider this… An actual structure where every team plays every team each season. This for me enhances the schedule.

@shteivred @btwncleansheets Just think of the scarf 🧣 sales. Will pour $$$ into the clubs. Perhaps they’ll be able to afford to lower 🍻 prices 😊. there’ll be more games. But across the entireleague not all affected by wintry conditions. A fan isn’t going to all games in Nov, just following their team.

@new2thecrew96 @btwncleansheets It's not 91% of games. It's 91% "of the calendar" which is a nice hand-wavy way ignoring that playoff months are actually substantially fewer games....which my original tweet already provided you with the numbers on.

hey if you say “there are pros and cons but I think switching to fall-spring is the way to go for mls” don’t act like anyone who took the opposite side is wrong. we saw the pros and cons too, my guy.

@shteivred @btwncleansheets They already play in February. It’ll be just a week sooner. As it’s been stated on official sites, 91% of the games won’t be affected.

@shteivred @btwncleansheets Sure. But each individual team isn’t playing that many more matches. And of those 75 or 90 (not sure where those numbers came from) most of them won’t be in winter conditions

@new2thecrew96 @btwncleansheets This year, there are 20 total matches across MLS in Nov/Dec. With five or six full match weeks in that window instead of playoffs, there will be 75 or 90 matches in the same window moving forward. It's a decent different, for what it's worth. Fine if you like ti anyway, though.

@drjfordo @ColumbusCrew Just checked and there are zero days below 30F at a standard kick off time coming up.. in late November.

@ColumbusCrew Thrilled I didn’t buy season tickets. Weather (even if they’re limiting northern games December and February) is going to be brutal. For a playoff game or finals game once in a while, ok. For 30F kickoff vs bottom dweller late November night regular season game, no chance!

@MikeInNebraska @ColumbusCrew Crew have played in December and February before this change. December 2023 was the best Crew game I’ve been to. We were Massive, you had to be there.

@ColumbusCrew I feel bad for your season ticket reps. How do you respond when someone asks why the fuck should I dump $5K a year to be disappointed in 20 degree weather. I already have the browns for that.

@AlexBrownKC @btwncleansheets Try telling mainland Europe (eg, Poland, Czech, Germany) they don’t get regular temps below 0c. They take a winter break. Same as MLS will now do. London is not representative of most of Europe in winter.

@btwncleansheets North American climate is so different compared to Europe's. The Gulf Stream moderates their temperatures year-round, and doesn't regularly get <0ºC in the winter in London, for instance. In the midwest, we have MONTHS below freezing. Fall-Spring is a hard sell for me.

@bcarl1970 @Crew96Times My point was statistically there are not really more than before. The % of teams in the world that qualify have remained steady throughout time. As more nations are created, it’s only fair that more teams take part. I never said more is better.

@new2thecrew96 @Crew96Times More is not better. What this does not account for is the many of the additional teams are coming from regions where the level of play is poor. You are not taking the best teams. It will create lopsided games and low quality matches in early rounds.

@bcarl1970 @Crew96Times In 1954 there were 16 at the World Cup out of 84 possible nations (about 20% of all teams participating). In 1982 it was 24 teams (18%), in 1998 it was 32 teams (only 15%!). Expansion to 48 means 22% of nations who compete qualify. Not a big increase, still hard to qualify.

@Crew96Times Goes to show if you expand the tournament to include enough teams, almost anyone can play in the World Cup.
