President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has learned with sadness about the passing of Professor Keto Elitabu Mshigeni who passed on Sunday, 22 March 2026, aged 82.
In her message of condolences, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says:
“I have learned with heartfelt sadness about the passing of Professor Keto Elitabu Mshigeni, who served as a Research Consultant at the University between 1991 and 1995 in the Faculty of Agriculture & Natural Sciences, where he contributed to early academic and research structuring.
Professor Mshigeni was a distinguished academic, renowned botanist, and a foundational figure in the establishment and early development of the University of Namibia (UNAM).
Professor Mshigeni contributed immensely to the establishment of the UNAM and he also served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Administration and Finance (1995–1998), helping to put in place key governance, administrative, and financial systems in place.
Professor Mshigeni subsequently became the Founding Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs and Research from 1998–2001, where he played a central role in shaping the University’s academic architecture, programme development, and research direction.
Beyond institutional leadership, Professor Mshigeni was an accomplished scientist whose work in marine botany, seaweed aquaculture, and environmental sustainability made a significant contribution to Namibia’s research landscape.
He was also involved in the United Nations University’s Zero Emissions Research Initiative (UNU/ZERI) in Namibia, where he pioneered seaweed and mushroom cultivation projects as sustainable, low-impact livelihood and biodiversity initiatives.
On behalf of the people and the Government of the Republic of Namibia, I extend heartfelt condolences to the wife, children, grandchildren and the entire bereaved family and friends. During this difficult time of bereavement, our thoughts and prayers are with the entire bereaved family.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
