I'm so excited to share this new project with you all. I know Baltimore will come together to support the next generation of kids and families. Please take the time to read the full thread and spread the word with a RT. Let's build a better Baltimore together.
Maryland Child Alliance@mchildalliance

🚨 Today we are announcing the Baltimore Baby Bonus Petition Drive. If we receive 10,000 signatures from Baltimore City voters, our Charter Amendment will appear on the ballot in 2024. If passed, Baltimore City parents will receive at least $1,000 upon the birth of a child. 🚨

Government must deliver for working people—and every dollar in our budget should work as hard as they do. That’s why I directed every agency to cut waste and help close our budget gap. Here’s some of what we found.

@mattgonter This was 20 years ago though. Does not feel that relevant to this campaign.

Not only has Bobby LaPin run in multiple legislative districts, he once ran for delegate in Harford County- where he talked about how cities like Bel Air & Abingdon should not have to suffer from "Big City issues." I wonder what he meant by that?

Increased leisure time is an important policy goal. We are also at a time where we need to build better social institutions so that leisure time has a more direct impact on well-being.

Pretty silly interpretation. Folks received an extra $12,000 a year and earned $1,800 less than relative to the control group. Trading some additional income for increased leisure time seems perfectly reasonable!

Another dagger for #UBI. Work fell, labor income fell, no impact on degree attainment. Money was used to subsidize leisure. We need to improve our safety net, but UBI isn’t the answer. nber.org/papers/w32719

From Ezra Klein, more true than ever. You would not believe how many shortcuts everyone else is taking. In many areas, you can get way ahead of everyone just by doing the work. More true than ever now, when more people are shirking and AI lets you do 10x if you try. 1/

A common misunderstanding is that supplying expensive new housing does not help the poor. No. Residents each move up a rung, freeing up housing at the bottom of the ladder. The latest, of many, papers to show this uses great data from Switzerland. 1/3 frederickluser.github.io/files/Moving_C…

@ejg5068 I used to watch every game. Just can't get myself to care anymore. 50% of the blame goes to Rhodes. 50% goes to us having a new roster every year.

Anyway there is absolutely no hope for this program in this climate no matter who the coach is considering the very high financial demands the AD is faces to support the new football program/stadium project. Go State!

the murder rate is falling for the same reason that the birth rate is falling, and also why there's fewer bands forming and lower church attendance, why teens are less likely to get drivers licenses or participate in team sports, why brick and mortar retail is in a death gasp, why we're in a "sex recession", why shared living spaces in new apartments are smaller, why volunteering rates are at their lowest in decades... all of these things require or enable people to be around other people—and that's not happening any more.
Zarathustra@zarathustra5150

"From 2003-2023, American adults reduced socializing by 30%. For teens, the decline was nearly 50%. There is no record of any period in history when people spent more time alone."

@KelseyTuoc @colindr @noahsloss Looking at teacher pay as pure accounting doesn't fully capture what is at play here. Teacher salaries should optimize the public good. If the cost of additional taxes is outweighed by the improvements to education, then salary increases are good.

@colindr @noahsloss I think that's indeed the position I'm coming around to, yes. I don't think public sector unions should exist, since as you say unions are about advancing the interests of their members at the expense of their employers (us, the citizenry).

New: Maryland grants in-state tuition to undocumented students if they submit three years of tax returns. But now the IRS is working with ICE, and students fear they'll be deported. It means that some of Maryland's best students aren't going to college. thebanner.com/education/high…

Unironically love this. The thing is that *actual* government waste and inefficiency is political poison to the left, because it erodes trust in the state and reinforces right-wing framing. It’s just that normally any effort to “reduce waste” actually means “starve the poor”
Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani@NYCMayor

This morning, I joined @PIX11News to announce a new executive order requiring every city agency to designate a Chief Savings Officer. Within 45 days, these officers will identify which city services deliver the strongest results for New Yorkers—and where we can streamline processes and cut waste. The goal is simple: make sure every public dollar works harder to deliver a safer, cleaner, and more affordable city.

Your Baltimore City Council includes many young(ish!) parents, and today at an Education, Youth, and Older Adults Committee hearing we took our first steps toward bringing universal PreK to Baltimore by diving into the child care landscape, joined by none other than State Superintendent Dr. Carey M. Wright. In a series of investigative hearings this year, your Council will work to understand what it will take to bring this essential service to our city.
