In Spanish, Americans are referred to as "estadounidense," literally "United Statesian" or "USian." This is officially because children in Spanish-speaking countries are taught that North and South America are a single continent. In reality, it's because they're resentful.

Trump renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America is an important assertion of our power in the world for a reason you might not have considered. Did you know that Latinos (and other Spanish speakers) insult Americans by refusing to call us by our proper name?
