BREAKING: SDNY has convened grand jury in Synapse disaster, new court filings, sources confirm: A court filing yesterday (Tuesday, Jan 21st) confirmed that the Southern District of New York office of the Department of Justice has convened a grand jury related to Synapse, presumably stemming from the still-unknown amount of missing end user funds, somewhere between $65 million and $96 million, according to the trustee. The motion seeks a relief of automatic stay regarding insurance payments from Synapse's D&O policy to cover the legal expenses of a former Synapse finance employee. According to a memorandum filed with the motion, the former Synapse corporate controller received a "grand jury subpoena for records and information relating to his work at Synapse" on October 16, 2024. The memo explained that, "The Subpoena directed Mr. Medeiros to appear before the grand jury and to produce enumerated categories of documents relevant to the investigation." Several other sources I've spoken with confirm the existence of a criminal investigation, undertaken by SDNY with support from DOJ headquarters and the Justice Department's Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section (MLARS).
