@KelseyTuoc @jttiehen And I think this instinct is buttressed by what recently happened with crypto, NFTs, etc. Similar case with extremely annoying boosters predicting doom but the success of the skepticism doesn’t necessarily translate to the next case.

@jttiehen I think there is a sincere belief that AI is overhyped and that its boosters are super annoying (fair!) which leads to casting around for an anti-AI argument, which leads to placing this argument in a position to bear a ton of weight it doesn't in fact bear.

Joseph Heath coined the term 'highbrow misinformation' for climate reporting that was technically correct, but arranged every line to give readers a worse understanding of the subject. I think that 'stochastic parrots/spicy autocomplete' is, similarly, highbrow misinformation.

I would conservatively estimate that 90% of literary discourse online is driven by people who literally do not read what they're pontificating about. They complain about contemporary fiction, literary fiction, genre fiction, postmodernism, YA books, etc. that they do not read.

@MariGO2thepolls In fact, I saw many arguing that shame would only feed into bad habits and less shame- inducing methods would be more effective at encouraging weight loss. A lot of this was just methodological.

@alyssaleann I think I’d have to give it to the Finnish salmon soup! Already convinced my friend to make it. Second place is the chili, which instantly became my go-to default chili. Honestly, no, I’ve genuinely loved every single one so far.

I understand everyone thinks wool is great, and natural fibers are great, but my skin cannot tolerate ANY wool, not even cashmere. Cotton is the only natural fiber I can wear for a sweater, and frankly, I prefer viscose to wool (which is basically straw imo.)

@EristheFair @suchnerve None taken. It’s anecdata all the way down anyway but in my experience, men don’t even make the distinction and women often categorize it all as emotional labor that they shouldn’t have to think about to begin with.

managing other people’s emotions for them is not the same thing as providing emotional support. emotional support is about comfort; emotional management is about processing - figuring out for them why X thing makes them feel Y way and how to be coped with by doing Z

Minnesota court sanctions lawyer for citing fake, AI-hallucinated case and chastises opposing lawyer for not catching it. Court says opposing counsel should have completed "a basic cite-check of the cases cited by the other side" so that the court would not be "left as the last line of defense."

@RachelZader @Spooky_Biscuits Seconding the CPAP. I also have very mild apnea and it was a game changer. Mild is a bit of a misnomer — it’s mild relative to severe apnea but waking up even once every night in the middle of REM sleep really sucks, especially over time.

@Spooky_Biscuits Get a CPAP! Even mild apnea can cause symptoms - I felt awful and mine was "mild", and I love my CPAP now that I have one. I feel loads better.

I help people get their sleep on track as part of my job and if you're not doing these for your sleep, your should: - Take 1mg or less ONLY of melatonin. Less is more with melatonin and you're not doing yourself favors with 5 or 10mg pills, which manufacturers make because people buy them thinking they're better. Not the case. - Sleep in 100% darkness. Light of any level interferes with your sleep. Get a sleep mask if you can't get your room dark. - Get better sheets. You should NOT be sleeping on polyester / microfiber - they trap heat and don't breathe either, promoting skin issues. Your temperature changes through the night, so a temp-regulating fabric like a linen/cotton blend is great for all seasons; or if you sleep too hot, try bamboo/viscose, which disappates heat. - Get enough sleep. If you're younger (adolescent to young adult) you may need 9 or even 10. Uterus owners, new research is out indicating we need a bit more sleep, including right around menstruation - 8.5 or 9 hours might be more appropriate even if you're an adult. - Try to get the same amount of sleep every day. A new study is out showing that it's likely healthier to get consistent sleep (ie 6h every night) over inconsistent but more sleep (ie 8, then 4, then 10). - Try magnesium balm. Mag is good for sleep quality and skin balm less hard on your stomach than a tablet. - GET YOUR PHONE OUT OF YOUR BED. I stg some of you are complaining about insomnia but still scrolling in bed - BLUE LIGHT SUPPRESSES MELATONIN. Your brain literally thinks it's daytime when you look at your phone's light so it's no wonder you're not sleeping. No phone or screens an hour before bed. Get a book, talk on the phone, or shower instead. - Similarly, get out of bed if you're not falling asleep. Lying there for hours teaches your brain to associate the bed with not sleeping, so get up and sit in dim light on the sofa - no, get off your phone - and read something boring until you feel more sleepy. - If you have ANY signs of sleep apnea or are overweight, I recommend asking about a sleep study - you can often get a small take-home device to do one. I was chronically tired, achy, etc but did not snore, so I was shocked when I found out it was mild apnea. Sleep onset insomnia can be a sign!
miss worm@missus_wormy

in 2026 we are: -wearing 100% cotton matching pajama sets -taking magnesium at nighttime -going to bed at a reasonable hour -sleeping in 100% darkness

@alyssaleann Whatever works, honestly! I can never seem to stick to posting publicly, but journaling is also hit/miss. I’m trying a weekly intentions prompt this year, thinking the goal setting + lower frequency will work. Either way, my memory is not enough docs.google.com/document/d/11Q…

@nickwritesit no, I've never been able to stick to a journal... apparently I only want to record my days in places where people can talk back to me. I've now spent half my life scattering thoughts across tumblr/insta/twitter (to be clear: I think this is somewhat of a personal failing)

Since 2020, I've spent the last week of every year on a memory-settling exercise I call Beautiful Moments: a list of things that happened, the way I want to remember them, paired with photos. A public scrapbook of my year It's kind of weird and too personal and meandering, but I love it. I love writing it, and I love the way knowing that this ritual is coming has begun to shape my life: I often find myself thinking, "ah! beautiful moment!" and committing something to memory that might otherwise have slipped away It's an acknowledgement that memory is fickle, that most of my life will be lost to the mists of memory. But not these moments; these are the ones I'm holding onto

The soup maxxing continues with Finnish Salmon Soup, as recommended by @alyssaleann. This one was delicious and very fun — I made my own fish broth! Will definitely be making this one again.
