UN Counter-Terrorism Centre Warns of Serious Potential Threat of Nuclear Terrorism Emanating from Afghanistan According to a report released on May 17, the widespread availability of new technologies, such as militarised drones and artificial intelligence, means that the current threat of nuclear terrorism is higher than ever before. The report indicates that Afghanistan, where Al-Qaeda maintains a strong presence, must be closely monitored. “I think the threat has never been as high as it is today,” said Mauro Miedico, Director of the UN Counter-Terrorism Centre (UNCCT). “Terrorist groups and individuals are engaging much more actively with new technologies. Terrorist groups have recruited experts, including AI specialists, and we have seen the use of drones in terrorist acts. This potentially increases the possibility that they could launch a dirty bomb via drone.” Link to article in comments ⬇️

🚨#THREAD: Al-Shabaab’s Technological Evolution Is Advancing Faster Than U.S. Counterintelligence and AFRICOM’s Assessments AFRICOM General Anderson’s Senate testimony yesterday sadly confirms intelligence I raised in 2024 regarding Al-Shabaab’s acquisition of weaponized drones and expanding Iranian/Houthi-linked asymmetric warfare capabilities. Some of these systems were reportedly already tested and nearly used during the disrupted October 2025 assassination attempt targeting Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud. The deeper concern is the persistent U.S. intelligence lag in publicly acknowledging emerging threats. We still have not officially acknowledged that Al-Shabaab has acquired longer-range strike systems, armed maritime platforms, and even undetectable suicide vests designed to bypass conventional security screening. Will recognition only come after these capabilities are operationally deployed on a larger scale?
