🧵 CAMBRIDGE: New data. Clear preferences. The public want buildings that fit in, not stick out. A new poll by @DeltapollUK for @createstreets finds 71% of Britons prefer a traditional alternative to the current design for the Christ’s College library. Here’s why it matters ⬇️

@boys_nicholas looks like they are reinstating what was there if the wall on the left is anything to go by...

@nimtimtim @MrTimDunn @RoyalFineArt @HS2ltd The materials used in the core of a design should always be the best regardless of age or novelty. If concrete works, use it. It is simply how you clad it. I can see a use for lightweight cladding that mimics brick or whatever in looks. Illusion is a key part of aesthetics.

Today I saw the stunning new 3.4km Colne Valley Viaduct: soon to be UK’s longest rail bridge, it frees up capacity & gives resilience to West Coast Mainline & other routes. It has won the @RoyalFineArt Commission Trust’s Building Beauty award: it is graceful; monumental; superb.

@Hick324 @MrTimDunn @RoyalFineArt @HS2ltd Good to hear. I guess I would argue that in this instance, the only material that could achieve this is concrete and that is what the designers have worked with: making it something light, elegant, compelling.

@nimtimtim @MrTimDunn @RoyalFineArt @HS2ltd As a "trad" I like it. I would have liked the materials to look a little more traditional, but that is a niggle. There is nothing wrong with new styles... they just need more subtlety like this bridge has.

Traditional - vernacular - housing of Brittany. Note the absence of air conditioning units due to the thermal mass provided by thick, low carbon, stone walls and abundant greenery, rather than heavily depaved front gardens. I mean, we could just do that in the U.K.
