Officials in Britain warn that the volume of illegal meat intercepted at the UK border has surged in recent years. It comes after a tearjerker tale about a gang of “kidnapped” dogs trekking miles home after escaping the meat trade was exposed as complete fiction. The clip – watched millions of times worldwide – had viewers convinced they were watching a real-life animal miracle. Chinese state media tracked down the animals’ owners and found all seven dogs belonged to villagers living just a few miles away. But it highlighted the chilling reality of dog theft for the meat trade that still exists in Asia – with between 10 and 20 million of deaths happening in China, Humane World for Animals says. Up to eight million of these dogs are snatched off the street, with the vast majority “illegally acquired,” according to Wendy Higgins from the Humane World for Animals. Campaigners warn that beloved family pets can disappear in seconds. Thieves often target pets left roaming in gardens, climbing over walls before slipping a noose around the dog’s neck and dragging it back over. Wendy said: “The dog thieves will steal a certain number of dogs and accumulate them until they’ve got enough to go on a transport truck.”

You won’t believe this. I didn’t. But it is true. In Aarhus, Denmark a 37 year old woman met a migrant in a bar and ended up imprisoned in a flat where she was subjected to a gang rape by three men for 6 hours. One of the men (an Eritrean national) was caught and deported. The other two Eritrean nationals were being actively hunted and Denmark put out an international appeal with their names and photos. The men (Awedin Fikak and Henok Tekleab) fled to France and then took small boats to the UK. They gave their real names and were given food, accommodation and support by the UK government. No checks were done against an international database which would have shown their status as suspected rapists wanted in Denmark. They lived off taxpayer money in the UK for 18 months until it was brought to light that they were wanted criminals. They have now been deported to Denmark to face the justice system. The whole system is farcical. Nobody thought that Eritreans, a nation where 65% of women say they are raped, would be suitable for European integration.

The offence of misconduct in public office is a common law offence carrying a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. It is committed when a public officer, acting in the course of their duties, wilfully neglects those duties or wilfully misconducts themselves to a degree that amounts to an abuse of the public’s trust, and does so without reasonable excuse. So why has Dame Antonia Romeo not been charged with Misconduct in Public Office? She was permanent secretary at the Home Office when she appeared before the Home Affairs Select Committee in December. Her duty was candour. Parliament was examining whether the evidence base for the most significant child sexual abuse inquiry in British history had been protected. She told the committee the department expected records to be preserved. She did not tell them that no formal instruction had gone to police forces. She did not tell them that Bradford and other areas had received nothing. She knew, or the means to know were available to her, that Casey’s requirement had not been met for six months. The CPS guidance is clear that wilful misconduct includes reckless indifference as to whether conduct is wrong. Mere negligence does not suffice. What Romeo did was not negligent. It was a senior official telling a parliamentary committee what they wanted to hear rather than what they needed to know. That is an abuse of the public’s trust in the office she held. She is now the cabinet secretary. The most powerful civil servant in the country. The question of whether any MP dares refer Dame Antonia Romeo for investigation, let alone report her to the police answers itself. Hedgehogs are nocturnal prey animals, they have no defences in the daytime, it's deadly dangerous for them. They are designed to hunt at night, to navigate and catch insects in the dark, occupying a specific ecological niche. They are not adapted to withstand high temperatures, and their shape means they rapidly dehydrate during daylight hours. They are nocturnal animals. So they don't come out in the day simply because they're hungry, or lost, or disturbed, or to move nests, or are pregnant, or for any other trivial reason. They come out in the day because it's warmer than the night and they are feeling cold. Deadly cold. They're feeling cold because they're so sick they're starting to die, and hypothermia is a stage of dying. Blood has been redirected to the vital organs, keeping them alive as long as possible, leaving the limbs feeling cold. If you see a hedgehog like this, out in the open, in the day time, no matter how 'well' he looks, it is an emergency. Every minute counts. DO NOT put them in a box and keep them, feeding them, not calling a rescue for advice for 3 days until their agony and infection is too much for them to bear and they stop moving. DO NOT feed them then move them under a bush because you think they shouldn't be in the sun, leaving them, utterly defenceless, to be predated alive there. DO NOT take them to a vet, none of whom are trained in wildlife and will simply put to sleep even viable wild animals. Please take them to a rescue (never a vet) URGENTLY. My toothache got so bad to the point it hurts to even swallow water, the left side of my face has ballooned to the point where I look like I’m morbidly obese and I was up all night with a temperature that I have needed to get medical intervention. > Rang the emergency dentist many times and couldn’t even get through > called 111 and was met with “I’m not medically trained enough other than to give you a text message of what you COULD do” > called the doctors and had to say that I have a learning disability in order to even be able to speak with someone. Then was met with “we don’t deal with teeth” despite explaining that I only needed some antibiotics currently as a dentist wouldn’t touch my teeth anyway until the infection cleared and I can’t get help from them. > pharmacy won’t touch me given it’s not classed as a minor infection > ended up going to A&E to then be told I’m better off at another building on site > they have said they MAY be able to prescribe me antibiotics given the severity of the situation but they don’t generally do it due to the same rules as the doctors and now I have to wait to see if I can get them All of these steps could have been avoided if I was already registered under an NHS dentist. Neglecting dentistry services is damaging the entire NHS ecosystem and partly causing wait times to soar. The government seriously needs to address this. There are also people who are not as pushy as myself who would have just given up and likely developed a very serious infection if not treated. The thought that people could be potentially dying of a tooth infection in a first world country is absolutely appalling.
