Step back around 2,700 years to the Spring and Autumn period.
This is the Zi Zhong Jiang Pan—a bronze basin that turns a simple handwashing ritual into a playful pond scene. 🌊

In Jingjiang, east China's Jiangsu Province, a driver suddenly fell unconscious while his foot remained on the accelerator. To prevent a potential accident, the driver of the car ahead firmly blocked the out-of-control vehicle. Several nearby citizens then worked together to break the window and rescue the driver, who was later rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. Thumbs up to them!👍#ChinaStory #URHero (Video via People's Daily)

Great news for Asian elephant conservation! Indonesia has officially ended elephant rides across the country. We must hope this ban is rigidly observed. STAE will be watching and reporting.

Is it a trending thing on X lately to take impressive Chinese things and label them as “Japanese”?
Take this Joey meme with “一 二 三” and “零”. These are Chinese characters (汉字). They originated in China thousands of years ago. Japan later adopted them as Kanji and still uses them today, but their roots are in China.
Chinese has two main number systems. The simple everyday ones (一 二 三 四 五…) use very basic strokes. They developed from the counting rods (算筹) that ancient Chinese used for calculations — basically small sticks arranged on a table.
The other set is the formal “financial” numbers (壹 贰 叁 肆 伍 陆 柒 捌 玖 拾…). These more complex forms were created to make tampering very difficult. They appear on cheques, contracts, invoices, and official documents to help prevent forgery.
Early examples of these financial-style numerals trace back to the Tang Dynasty (618–907 AD), with some linked to the period of Wu Zetian. They became a mandatory standard during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644 AD). After major corruption scandals (such as the Guo Huan case in 1385), Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang required their use in all financial records as an anti-fraud measure. The practice has continued for centuries.
