The only true runners are flukes on ethereum that are old and have no gen z to control its supply and is reliant on elon tweets. - The handful of projects that were considered investment-worthy are either not (aave, for example) or are already adequately priced (hype, zec). there are a few silent runners like $morpho but not many and low volume. - GameFi is dead. SocialFi is dead. L2s are barren. Financial activity only exists to farm points. Did I miss anything? Is anyone excited about anything? Something? Drift, DefiCarrot, Alon’s House - What an Interesting Break Some unfortunate and fascinating things happened during my hiatus on X. Not only was I taking a break publicly, but privately I had stepped away from crypto as well. The only exception was buying more spot BTC in the 60s and low 70s, which I immediately moved to cold storage. Losing When You’re Not Playing the Game It’s a special kind of insult to not be actively playing the game and yet somehow still lose money in crypto. As grave dancers were all too quick to remind me, I had been a fan of Drift. I was trying to consolidate my crypto life onto one blockchain for efficiency. I genuinely appreciated the user safeguards Drift had built - protections that shielded users on 10/10 from price action that wasn’t real. They were one of the only teams taking consumer protection to that level. I had gotten to know the team and founders fairly well, and being someone who is usually a pretty good judge of character, I genuinely liked them. Then the Drift exploit happened. I had $500,000 deposited in my Drift account when it happened, along with an open long-term position that would be up six figures today if the protocol hadn’t frozen. Even though I was taking a break, I was still lurking behind the scenes, so I became aware of the exploit very early, when Mert first called it out. Naturally, I immediately tried to withdraw funds, but it was already too late. Drift had been drained. I just sat there shaking my head. You have got to be kidding me. Somehow I had managed to lose money without even actively playing the game. I have mixed feelings about it. On the human side, knowing the team, I feel really bad for them. They are good people, and they have a long road to recovery. On the side of a person who was directly impacted by it, I was pissed. This was a completely avoidable human-failure incident. And it just goes to show how not decentralized all of our DEXs really are. I had previously withdrawn all of my own money from DefiCarrot to support a project I was running. However, I had set my father up with DefiCarrot to earn extra money on his retirement savings. I knew they always had a small amount of Drift exposure, but in the past it had been a really insignificant amount. Come to find out, they had pivoted, and at the time of the exploit they had 50% of their TVL allocated to Drift strategies. I don’t know why that pivot happened. I can speculate that it was to help boost ever-diminishing yield on Solana DeFi in a bear market. And I can’t even say with a straight face that I would have objected if I had known. After all, I knew Drift, and I trusted Drift. I still haven’t been able to tell my father that he lost half of his money. I’m simply going to replace what he lost and move him into a different financial instrument. Like Drift, I had gotten to know DefiCarrot really well, and I feel for them too. On one hand, their basket-based yield strategy protected depositors better than others. It wasn’t a total loss the way some protocol strategies were. In that sense, the system worked. On the other hand, I know it’s going to be a long road to recovery for the whole of Solana DeFi, because many entities were directly or indirectly impacted. Fake Decentralization Not only did the Drift exploit highlight how not decentralized we really are, but I also watched in silent amusement and horror as the Alon’s House meme was launched. I’m not a fan of anyone getting doxxed. I think PumpFun is a cancer to this space. I hold no love for the organization. But his wife and kids, assuming he has them, are innocents. Putting a family at risk - especially children - is not cool. Modern society has evolved past punishing children for "sins of the father" What was fascinating, though, was watching a platform that has allowed the doxxing of other people, and that has allowed some of the most vulgar, harmful, and hateful things to run unchecked under the excuse of “we can’t do anything about it,” wipe that coin from existence in a heartbeat the second it revealed the location of Alon’s house. That exposed just about as much about that organization as everything else I had already witnessed. And CT noticed the hypocrisy immediately, which I was thankful for. Advancements Are Written In Blood In aviation, people say the rules are written in blood. Checklists, crew resource management procedures, maintenance protocols, redundancy requirements, sterile cockpit rules - those things did not come from theory. They came from crashes. They came from people dying. They came from preventable failures that forced the industry to improve the framework for future passengers. That is how serious industries mature. Crypto still has not entirely learned that lesson. We are still living in a world of trust theater, selective enforcement, and fake decentralization. Systems are called decentralized until a human failure exposes them. Platforms claim neutrality until the wrong person gets affected. If this industry has any future at all, it will only be because its next standards are also written in blood - not literal blood, but in exploits, collapses, destroyed trust, lost savings, and public failures that leave no room for denial. Every major failure is a chance to build a real rule, a real safeguard, a real standard, and a real cultural line that cannot be crossed again. That is the choice in front of crypto: keep romanticizing chaos, or finally grow up. 🫡 From the depths — The White Whale 🐋
