@HaltsSpider @moultano As usual, “most people” is highly dependent on your social group. But here, thinking along the lines of the original post, I’m imagining kids.

@sdamico Ah, if that check is going away soon, that’s good. Thanks. (I ended up temporarily running a WiFi AP out to get the stove running again.)

We’re pushing the hardware to the limit so want to ensure people don’t face problems we’ve already fixed. This check is going away shortly now that we’re ~stable in terms of device software. For the phone thing — that implies you’re on a really old release (we updated the WiFi firmware 1 or 2 times). The trick might be to bring it further away from the device.

@sdamico this thing where the stove refuses to start if it hasn’t connected to WiFi for 30 days is stupid. Also it can’t seem to see my phone hotspot. I know I’m in an edge case (in the steady state the stove will always have WiFi), but come on.

i never really "felt" the quality degradations others report in their LLMs but it feels like the past few days Codex is noticeably dumber during the day and then after 5pm becomes much smarter

People don't want to hear this... but this is actually Millennials. Andy Weir is a Gen X, but the sincerity of his books speak to the generation under him. Millennials grew up in a time where they bullied each other for being sincere as the nihilism of Gen X culture was the dominant force. As soon as we became adults, we split into two groups: 1) continued on the path of cynicism into drugs, debauchery, and pushing back against personal responsibility, or 2) were free of the conformity of our youth and could finally do whatever we wanted and ernestly as we wished. This is why authors like Andy Weir have an audience, filmmakers like Denis Villeneuve as well. People are craving sincerity after a lifetime of being told not to care.

If you see Project Hail Mary this weekend, I hope you'll remember how I told you over 3 years ago that stuff like this was going to explode in pop culture. -From ironic cynicism to post-ironic sincerity. -Embracing the "cringe" & the celebration of the earnest "try-hard." -From deconstructing the past, to a nostalgia for some positive "vibe" we lost in the deconstruction. -The rejection of Fight Club-era nihilism. -The ability to stare at the apocalypse in front of you and be hopeful instead of a "doomer."

@kevin2kelly Do you interview candidate drivers’ for communication skills, or do you decide based on reviews?

Renting a car is easier than ever today, even in developing countries, and oftentimes the best bet for getting around if you are headed for many places outside of cities. It is an option worth considering, especially if you are 2 to 3 people traveling. On the other hand, there are still plenty of places where you don’t want to drive because of chaotic roads, lawless attitudes, and unfavorable liabilities. In those places hiring a driver plus car for a multi-day trip is often a surprisingly appealing bargain—especially if you have 2 to 3 people to split the costs. The total could be less than taking trains and taxis, and you get door to door service, and often a built-in guide who knows the local roads and also local festivities and best places to eat. They will be at least 2x the cost of renting a car, but for some kinds of travel 2x as good. If you are a spontaneous traveler, a hired driver is by far the best option allowing you to change your itinerary immediately as mood, weather, or lucky timing dictate. I usually find drivers by searching travel forums for recommendations. I score candidates primarily by their communication skills. #KKtraveltips

There are a lot of great books about books, movies about movies, music about music, what are some great crossover examples, where the art describes the nature of a different medium than itself?

One thing that kind of bothers me about Chinese cosmology is you’re supposed to do ancestor worship right? This assumes their spirits are around and available in some form. But wait! Then after Buddhism reached China everybody pretty much started believing in reincarnation. But nobody stopped the ancestor worship! Ok I understand syncretism is a thing but where TF is the spirit of the ancestors? If they have reincarnated who are receiving your offerings? Or are they hanging around for a certain amount of time until you don’t need em anymore? Or does their spirit split or fork in some way? Or it’s like you are benefitting them wherever they happened to be reborn? Or there’s a way in which you are interacting with them as a pattern even if their consciousness has now been reborn? There’s supposed to be an old woman who offers souls a soup that you drink to forget everything. That’s a hard wipe of the hard-drive. But nobody ever seems to worry from the ancestor worshipping side when this wipe is happening! Presumably your ancestors are going to be 404 not found after that? It’s understandable that I don’t know this…I was born into a Christian Chinese family. And it’s not crazy that the average Chinese person doesn’t know this on the mainland because they went through communism and atheism. But I think what’s crazy is none of this stuff got debugged and turned into doctrine properly. Nobody thought to form a council or something??? There are sutras and texts and things but where are the creeds? I mean this sounds like a criticism but truly it isn’t. Seems a lot more chill and reasonable than Shia vs Sunni beef or Christian wars of religion and schisms over Holy Spirit is from the father or of the father n things.
