@mikegrib8 He was always overrated (one defensive team in his career, a 2nd, is probably right) But oh well, it's alright when youre not horrible and can play alongside Steph and Dray (& iggy fwiw)

The truth is i did defensive tracking in 2016/17 and Klay still wasnt that good of a defender even then
databallr@databallr

Klay had good analytics in his prime (nowhere near Steph or Draymond), but he was worse than his reputation in some ways. He was good in the areas that people think: Increasing his team's shooting efficiency (oTS) and reducing his opponents shooting efficiency (dTS). He added value on a stacked team as an amazing high volume off ball shooter and a good primary defender. He was on ball offensively only 10% of the time. His value was not dependent on having the ball in his hands and can fit around other stars, effectively raising the ceiling of the team. If you add prime Klay Thompson to the current Sixers, I see the analytical fit and offensive synergy immediately with Maxey and Embiid. However, you can see here in his 6 factor rapm decomposition that he was a negative in second chance points (oSC, dSC) on both ends and defensive turnover value (dTOV). He had just a 1% offensive rebound rate in his prime. He is a non-contributor on the offensive glass relative to his role. He also had a well below average steal rate and he absolutely does not take charges. Defensive playmaking is a primary way for perimeter defenders to drive defensive impact on the scoreboard, because the expected value of a steal is enormous. Guys like Kawhi, Herb Jones, OG, Caruso, Tony Allen, etc. all have much higher steal rates and much better impact numbers (even ones that ignore the boxscore). Being a good shell defender and primary defender only takes you so far in impact. JB has similar weaknesses in his profile, but to a lesser degree. I do think Bob has a point though. If you don't have an elite primary defender to match up with these MVP caliber offensive players in the playoffs, you're probably going to get cooked, and that's a place where Klay's defensive impact could have been greater than his average across the regular season. I've also seen data suggesting the gap between elite hustle players and normal hustle players closes in the playoffs. In general everyone largely agrees being a weak on ball defender can get exploited in the playoffs, and Klay was not that. That being said, I do think it's very beneficial for primary defenders to have a high steal rate. If you're not a real threat to take the ball away from these elite offensive guys, then they are still able to find passes for others and search for good shots while turnover risk remains low. They should feel real danger. That's what people felt around a 4% steal rate player like Tony Allen. Klay in his prime had steal rates as low as 1.1%. There's certainly trade offs in strategy but the higher steal rate guys tend to be far more impactful on the scoreboard.

Shams: "Over the last three, four weeks while this Jaylen Brown stuff was going on, teams were calling the Celtics on Jayson Tatum. Their answer was hard stop: 'No, we're not trading Jayson Tatum. He's untouchable. He's not on the table.' Jaylen Brown, different story. Open for business. Ready to trade him. 'Give us your best offer.' So that's the dichotomy of both of those situations. Just so we know from a reporting perspective, like they treated Jaylen Brown different than they treated Jayson Tatum."

Now that it’s over, here’s one perspective on the Jaylen Brown situation. The bottom line: the basis behind the trade was always about redistributing the talent = replacing shot making value with defense / possession creation impact. Then everything starts to make more sense.

@yimbyism @shawnmicha87440 @kmedved Trades also signal some type of unhappiness that causes teams, like the Bucks, to go "uh, why are you trying to get rid of *this* guy" as opposed to emotional attachment to current players

@shawnmicha87440 @kmedved They're considering analytics in trades, but when it comes time to max Paolo Banchero (and supermax Jaylen Brown) the money still goes out the door. Ownership may not be fully convinced yet and interfering when it comes to resigning established players.

Not great, not terrible. On paper, this trade is fine. Brown is a better player than George, but the gap is small on a per possession basis (health is a separate issue). They're both negative value contracts. George has one fewer year, but is older, and less healthy, so the Celtics pick up one good pick, and one mystery box pick for their troubles. Seems fine. The issue with this trade is *perceived value*. Jaylen Brown is a top ~50-ish player who is widely viewed as like, a top 15 player, and the Celtics traded him without collecting any of the premium from that perception gap. That's fine, but leads to consternation obviously. They lost a lot of perceived trade value, but as we leaned the last week, that value probably didn't really exist among team front offices. That's frustrating, but also hard for me to blame them, given I agree that Brown probably is actually closer to the 50th best guy than the 15th. So why do it? I have no inside info, but given the Celtics behavior here, I infer that Brown had either explicitly asked for a trade, or was close to it, so the Celtics were under some pressure here to make a move.

@TimetoRebuildit @PranavSriraman @SpecialPuppy1 Yea and boston took their 6moty but more that, just likely regression to their mean as well (good, but not as historical as their playoff run). They could be better but limiting their ceiling is a bit weird when they were just the 2 seed *without* their best player.

Boston gonna be a top 3 seed but with or without FCHWPO I don’t think they’re tier 1 contenders anymore. Required a clear identity shift/talent surplus which is what they were going for with Giannis. They’re now doing the opposite and it’s more emphasis on what they were doing. Tatum being the primary downhill guy is not ideal.

So, not to turn everything into an analytics discussion. But this is a good example. I watched maybe all of Cameron Boozer's minutes this season, as well as most of Dybantsa, Peterson, Wagler, and a few others. A lot of the other prospects were far more checking for certain things, but I saw pretty much every possession Boozer played across the entire season. I know that a lot of my film friends really love Boozer as well, so this isn't an indictment on good film analysis. For example, @GrizzliesFilm, @LoganPAdams, @JoeHulbertNBA, all do great film work (as well as a lot of others), that helps me a lot in my own analysis.. So it seems like if you were really good at basketball analysis, you'd pretty much see Boozer's versatility in how he can play a bunch of different roles in a ton of playtypes (he can be screener or initiator, spacer or driver. So why were the "eye test" people so down on him? Like I'm not talking about the people who had Dybantsa over him, but rather, didn't even include him in discussions for #1. I just honestly feel like a lot of people didn't watch him, genuinely. So when people say "the eye test works" I just know most of you don't watch much at all. GOOD ANALYSIS works.
