The first Zulu (2nd Black South African) to qualify as a medical doctor was Dr John Mavuma Nembula (1861 - 1897). He was born in Amanzimtoti, Natal, was educated at the Adams Mission. He worked as a teacher & translator and in 1881 went to the USA with Reverend S C Pixley in order to assist in the translation of the Bible into Zulu. While Pixley returned to South Africa after publication, Nembula remained in the United States to take advantage of educational opportunities available for him. For several years he studied at the Preparatory Department of Oberlin College and there earned a certificate in Penmanship. He spent the 1884-85 academic year studying sciences at the University of Michigan. In 1885 Nembula enrolled as a second year student at Chicago Medical College (the predecessor of Feinberg School of Medicine), and earned his MD in March 1887. He supported himself by putting his Penmanship certificate to work, taking on clerical work and inscribing visiting cards (cartes des visité), which were a burgeoning business with the advent of affordable photography. Nembula returned to South Africa early in 1888.
